Outlander is an American fantasy - television series by Ronald D. Moore . It is based on the novel series of the same name (known in Germany as the Highland Saga ) by Diana Gabaldon . The series started in the USA on August 9, 2014 on the US pay TV broadcaster Starz . In Germany, the pay-TV channel Passion has been broadcasting the series since January 6, 2015.

The fourth season started broadcasting in November 2018. Two more seasons have been commissioned.

action

The first season begins shortly after the end of the war in 1945. After serving as a hospital nurse at the front, Claire Randall and her husband Frank spend their second honeymoon in Scotland. When entering a mystical stone circle, it is thrown back to the year 1743 and now has to adapt to the completely changed circumstances. Her knowledge of history helps her in this - both her husband and her uncle, with whom she grew up after the accidental death of her parents, were historians - and her medical skills, but she soon had the reputation of being a witch. As a way out of another emergency, she marries the young Scottish warrior Jamie Fraser, who is also threatened by persecution, betrayal and greed. Claire stands between two men and has to choose between the future she belongs in and the past she lives in.

The first part of the second season takes place in Paris in the vicinity of Prince Charles Edward Stuart , who is in exile there, and who is preparing the Scottish Jacobite revolt of 1745. Claire knows the tragic outcome of this historical event for Scottish highland culture and therefore tries, with Jamie's help, to change the course of history. In the second part of the second season, the two realize that their efforts have been in vain. Claire and Jamie can not prevent the Battle of Culloden . Jamie asks pregnant Claire to go back in time to protect the unborn child - Claire agrees with a heavy heart. The second season finale takes place 20 years later. Jamie and Claire's daughter, Brianna, is now a grown woman. Together they travel to Scotland, where Claire learns that Jamie is alive and did not die in battle.

The third season of the US series begins with a glimpse into the 20 years that Claire and Jamie lived apart. Claire raises her daughter Brianna with her ex-husband Frank Randall in Boston. Although there are always arguments between the two, they remain a couple for Brianna and get the appearance of an intact family. Claire begins a medical degree over the years and becomes a respected surgeon who still mourns the past. In the meantime, Jamie survives the battle in which his arch-rival Black Jack Randall is killed, but is subsequently wanted as a traitor across the country. When caught, he is detained in Ardsmuir Prison. There he befriends the British officer Lord John Gray, thanks to whom he survived Culloden. Lord Gray enables Jamie to work on the Helwater estate, where he looks after the owners' horses, among other things. In Helwater, Jamie is blackmailed and forced to have sex by the young, attractive Geneva Dunsany. Thereby his son Willie is conceived, who is supposed to be foisted on the future husband of Geneva as a cuckoo child. He notices the dizziness, but cannot prove it. Jamie lives on Helwater for more years to stay with his son. Only as Willie gets older and the two look more and more similar, Lord Gray suggests Jamie leave Helwater.

Many years later - 20 years since saying goodbye to Claire - Jamie lives in Edinburgh under the false name Alexander Malcolm and runs a printing company. When Claire finds out, she leaves her daughter Brianna to travel back in time and see Jamie again. When Jamie's nephew is kidnapped while trying to recover a treasure discovered by Jamie, Jamie and Claire follow the kidnap ship to Jamaica. On the way back, their ship gets caught in a storm and the two are stranded on the American coast.

The fourth season is based on the novel The Call of the Drum and takes place mainly in North America in the state of North Carolina .

production

In June 2013, US pay-TV channel Starz announced that they would be broadcasting a 16-part series from the saga's first book. Production by Ronald D. Moore started in October 2013. Writer Diana Gabaldon is available as an advisor and, like Ronald D. Moore, will have a small cameo role in the series.

On July 9, 2013 it was announced that Sam Heughan would cast the role of the main character Jamie Fraser, followed on August 8 by Tobias Menzies for the double role of Frank / Black Jack Randall. On September 4, the roles of the MacKenzie brothers Colum and Dougal were cast with Gary Lewis and Graham McTavish . Irish model Caitriona Balfe was selected for the role of lead character Claire Randall on September 11, 2013.

Filming took place near Glasgow from October 2013 to August 2014 . The music for Outlander is composed by Bear McCreary , who previously worked with Moore on Battlestar Galactica . The title music of the opening credits Skye Boat Song was re-covered by McCreary and accompanied vocally by his wife Raya Yarbrough .

Filming for the fourth season in Scotland began in October 2017.

Filming for the fifth season began in April 2019 and will be broadcast on February 16, 2020.

Reviews

Event in New York: Tobias Menzies , Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe as well as Diana Gabaldon and Ronald D. Moore (from left to right).

For Julia Weigl from the Süddeutsche Zeitung, the series, like the books, “maintains the balance between pompous romance and fascinating Highlands mysticism”. The adaption of the series has to make concessions in depth with Claire's thoughts, which she can only express through face and voiceover; there is more space in the books for this. Outlander maintains its charm in the dubbing - just like in the original version with the fact that the Scots speak Gaelic without subtitles , "nobody understands anything".

Ursula Scheer, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung saw the series " Eskapismus -Fernsehen" with sympathetic and hearty characters that are played properly and a rather thin dramaturgy that is compensated for by the equipment and staging. The view of naked bodies occupies a clear place in the series and among its fans, here in contrast to series such as The Tudors or Game of Thrones from a female perspective of the man as a romantic love object or show object.

Sabine Stevenson from Serienjunkies.de sees the start of Outlander as a careful structure of Claire's background story with good musical background. The transition through the stones has been discussed controversially in fan circles, but was implemented appropriately with the rest of the first episode. Visually, the Highlands have rarely been presented so well and realistically since Highlander . The series is close enough to the books, even if Claire's comments lack self-irony or humor. Overall, however, there is still room for improvement.
