The 2022 Portugal general election was held on 30 January 2022, as an early election following a dissolution of parliament . The 230 members of the unicameral parliament Assembleia da República were elected .

The socialists who have ruled up to now were able to increase their share and achieved a narrow absolute majority of the parliamentary seats.

initial position

António Costa , leader of the Socialists (PS) , has been prime minister since 2015. His minority government includes several non-party ministers as well as ministers from his party.

In the 2019 general election , the Socialists gained seats, but remained eight seats short of an absolute majority.

After the government was unable to agree on the budget for 2022 with either of the two left-wing factions CDU and BE , which usually support it, President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa dissolved parliament on December 5, 2021.

The new election was scheduled for January 30, 2022. Costas PS is committed to a balanced budget and a continuation of the current reform course, which includes economic reforms and a reduction in public debt . In contrast, the smaller left parties wanted to increase public spending. During the election campaign, the right-wing populist Chega stirred up anti-immigrant and ethnic minority elections.

voting system

The 18 constituencies of mainland Portugal

226 MEPs are elected in Portugal in 20 constituencies.

Constituencies form the 18 districts on the mainland , the Azores and Madeira each form their own constituency. By far the largest constituencies are Lisbon (48 seats) and Porto (40 seats), while there are 13 constituencies with fewer than 10 seats. The four remaining seats are elected by the Portuguese abroad in two constituencies (one includes other European countries, the other the rest of the world) with two MPs each.

Each voter has one vote, with which they vote for a list. Seats are allocated at the constituency level among the lists using the D'Hondt method . The seats allocated to a list shall be filled in the order of their candidates on the list.
