Qobustan (Rayon)
The Qobustan Rayon is an Azerbaijani administrative district with the capital Qobustan (until 2008 M 2008rəzə, not to be confused with the settlement of Qobustan belonging to Baku ). As a landscape name, Qobustan also includes the area bordering the district to the southeast.
geography
The rayon has an area of 1,369.4 km². The region is mountainous, there are deposits of oil, natural gas and building materials. There are several mineral springs in the rayon.
history
From 1930 to 1943 and 1960 to 1990, the Qobustan District area was part of the Şamaxı District .
population
The district had 40,000 inhabitants in 2009, spread over 35 settlements.
economy
The region is dominated by agriculture. Above all, grain and wine are grown and cattle are raised.
Attractions
Near Qobustan is the mausoleum of the Sufi mystic Diri Baba (“living grandfather”) from 1402. There are also several other mausoleums and places of worship of Islam and older religions.
