The broadcasting station Hamburg-Rahlstedt is a transmitter for VHF and DVB-T .

Old tower

The old tower was erected in 1994 as a 163-meter-high, guyed steel framework mast. After the completion of the new transmitter mast, the structure was dismantled in March 2010.

New building

In 2009, work began on the erection of a new 250 meter high transmission mast in the immediate vicinity of the old transmission mast, which was supposed to improve the distribution of DVB-T television programs in particular. The new transmission mast is the third tallest structure in Hamburg.

criticism

Nature conservation associations criticized the new building because it was assumed that many dead birds per day were caused by the guy ropes. The tower is surrounded by the Höltigbaum nature reserve - which is home to many rare species of birds - but not part of it, so that the city of Hamburg was able to approve the new building despite these concerns. No significant number of dead birds were found after the new building.

Alster-Radio, the only radio station that is broadcast from the transmission tower, complains about high and still rising costs and sees its existence threatened as a result. So far, around 183,000 euros per year have been charged for the provision of the antenna, from April 2017 the annual costs are expected to rise to 387,000 euros. Relocation to another transmission tower is considered unlikely for technical reasons.
