The electric locomotives of the series Siemens ES64U4 (Taurus III) used in various railway companies , especially in Southern and Eastern Europe, are multi-system - three-phase - purpose locomotives based on the technology of Siemens - Euro Sprinter based -Typenfamilie. The locomotives have been used in cross-border scheduled traffic since 2006. ÖBB currently owns 50 locomotives , the last of which holds the world record for conventional electric locomotives at 357 km / h .

technology

The locomotive was rolled out on March 31, 2005 at the Siemens factory in Munich-Allach . The electrical and electronic parts of the locomotive largely correspond to the Siemens ES64F4 , but from the outside it looks largely like an ÖBB 1116 . The detail changes:

  • The car body is 300 mm longer
  • Four conventional doors, instead of two + emergency exits, to be able to take over the interior of the ES64F4.
  • Cladding of the roof structures, which (parallel to the ES64F4) are much more extensive
  • Lower roof center section compared to 1116 in order to comply with the vehicle gauge according to UIC 505
  • The upper signal light of the front lighting is now above the front window
  • LED lighting as in DB series 189 / ES64F4
  • Handlebar for the shunter pulled up to the corners
  • The start-up noise with Doric scale known from the predecessor ES64U2 has been omitted.

To save mass, the main transformer was made 2.5 tons lighter. This is why the maximum output of the locomotive is slightly lower than that of the previous series: continuous output 6 MW, hourly output 6.4 MW.

The locomotives can travel on hilltops with a gradient curve from 250 m.

In October 2003, the ÖBB transformed the order for the last 68 locomotives of the 1116 series into an order for 50 further developed locomotives which, as three-system locomotives, can also run under 3 kV DC voltage.

The ÖBB locomotives are used in the neighboring countries of Austria, particularly Italy and Slovenia .

On March 31, 2005, the first three locomotives were ceremoniously handed over to the ÖBB.

The first locomotives were equipped with the following country-specific packages:

  • 1216 001–025 as variant A for Austria, Germany, Italy and Slovenia
  • 1216 141–150 as variant B for Austria, Germany and Slovenia
  • 1216 226–240 as variant C for Austria, Germany, the Czech Republic and Slovakia

Due to delays in the licensing of routes in the Czech Republic and Slovakia , 1216 227-231 units suitable for Slovenia (variant B) were converted and in April 2007 redesignated as ÖBB 1216 127-131, which has now been reversed. Also in April 2007, ÖBB 1216 232 was converted into 1216 032 for 200 km / h approval runs in Italy .

Locomotives of the 1216 series have been used across borders in front of the DB-ÖBB-EC between northern Italy and Munich since May 2010 and reach Verona , Bologna and Venice on scheduled passenger services . Except for Austria and Germany, the locomotive was initially only approved for Slovenia. The approval for Italy required the installation of the SCMT train control system . Initially, the locomotives designed for Italy could not be used freely, but an individual permit including attribution to an Italian railway company had to be applied for for each locomotive. Since summer 2016, the 1216.0 can freely be used in passenger and freight traffic.

In the Czech Republic, the track vacancy detection systems that were not set up against interference currents prevented approval. Only after the main lines had been converted to axle counters, the locomotives were allowed on the route (Vienna–) Břeclav – Prague – Děčín (–Dresden) from 2008 . Approval for Slovakia is not possible for the same reason. Since the timetable change in December 2008, the 1216 has been used in front of the EC trains (Graz – Wiener Neustadt–) Vienna – Břeclav – Prague (–Berlin). An originally planned run to Dresden was not implemented, however, a locomotive change takes place in Prague. In the 2010 timetable, however, an ÖBB 1216 with an EN train pair reached Dresden Hbf as planned .

ÖBB 1216 230 with an RJ

On April 9, 2013, the 1216.229 was the first 1216 in Railjet design to be completed. It will be one of three 1216s (229–231) that will run between Graz and Prague with ÖBB Railjet sets, the remaining seven 1216s used for this will be painted in the ČD Railjet design. As the first 1216 in the ČD design, the 1216.235 left the main workshop in Linz on September 13, 2013, and was officially presented in Brno on September 18. In the course of spring 2014 the 1216.233, 234, 236, 237, 249 (ex 149) and 250 (ex 150) followed.

In the course of 2014, the 1216.233 to 237 as well as 249 and 250 with the brand-new RJ sets 001 to 007 were handed over to ČD . While the trains are owned by the Czech State Railways, the locomotives are only rented. Since December 2014, the seven ČD sets have been running together with three ÖBB-RJ sets every two hours between Graz, Vienna and Prague.

In September 2014 the ÖBB 1216 147 was on test drives in Croatia for the first time. For this purpose, the pallet of one of the two outer AC current collectors (1950 mm for Austria and Germany) was exchanged for one with a width of 1600 millimeters. In the meantime, the 1216 147 has been approved in Croatia, the 1216 141–146 and 148 have also been converted in this way.

ÖBB 1216 025 in world record design

The 1216 017 - 020 have been used in Railjet traffic between Vienna Hbf and Venezia Santa Lucia via Pontebbana since December 2017 . Two more locomotives followed in 2019 in order to be able to cover the increased demand for Italian-compatible Railjet locomotives from December 2019 due to the new train pair Vienna - Bolzano / Bozen.

Since June 2019, ÖBB 1216 has been arriving on schedule with a ČD Railjet from Praha hl.n. coming the Slovak capital Bratislava.

Special paintwork

In October 2013, 1216.141 was with films in ÖAMTC provided design, the 1216 019 advertises since May 2019 in cooperation with ROCO model railway for Leonardo Da Vinci .

ÖBB 1216 025 was repainted after the world record run and is now used in a dark gray color scheme with inscriptions indicating the world record in Austria, Germany, Slovenia and Italy in scheduled traffic, mainly with freight trains.

Since March 2011, some 1216.0s, which are intended for the Brenner-EC Munich-Innsbruck-Italy, have had a large Italian flag on the side with inscriptions that refer to the joint web presence of ÖBB and DB on Italian traffic. In February 2014, the 1216.007 was designed in the same way. In the course of the due repainting, most of the locomotives have already lost their flags.

The 1216.229-231, 233-237, 249 and 250 have the ÖBB or ČD-RJ design, although a ČD-RJ-1216 often goes with an ÖBB-RJ set and vice versa. The 1216.210, 226–228 and 238–240 are traffic red and are mainly used by RCC in freight traffic between Hohenau and Bohumín or Chałupki on the Czech-Polish border, with Railjet deployments also taking place on a temporary basis. On the 1216 228, the ÖBB logos were exchanged for those from Rail Cargo Carrier .

In addition, the 1216 014, 016, 017, 018 and 020 were repainted in the RJ design with a red bar on the fronts for use in Italy.

Slovenian series 541

The Slovenian Railways ( ) received ten locomotives of variant B2 and ten locomotives of variant F ( series 541 ) between June 2006 and May 2007. A further twelve vehicles of variant B2 were ordered in January 2007 with a value of 48 million euros, which have been in regular service since May 2009.

  • 541 001–022 as variant B2 for Austria, Germany, Croatia and Slovenia
  • 541 101–110 as variant F for Austria, Germany, the Czech Republic, Croatia, Hungary, Italy and Slovakia

The first locomotive of the 541 series was completed in the second half of 2005 and subjected to a first short test run on October 28, 2005.

These locomotives can be driven with the Austrian 1216 in multiple control.

In June 2008, the Polish state railways PKP ordered ten locomotives of the type ES64U4 from Siemens. The PKP series EU 44 was given the name Husarz (Husar). In September 2008, Siemens delivered a locomotive with the number 183 601, which was initially used for certification runs in Poland. Several locomotives of this type are now in use in Polish regular service. All ten Husarz machines are now called PKP Intercity 5 370 001 to 010. They also come to Berlin on Eurocity trains.

On July 30, 2010, PKP Intercity and Siemens signed a contract for the delivery of ten additional locomotives of the ES64U4 type in the amount of 44.5 million euros.

Arriva initially has four locomotives as Arriva class 183 (183 001–183 004) for the ALEX traffic it has been operating on the Munich – Regensburg (–Schwandorf – Hof / –Furth i. Wald – Pilsen – Prague route) since December 2007 procured, which have the box of the ES64U4, but are pure AC locomotives for 15 kV / 16.7 Hz and 25 kV / 50 Hz. The official designation of the locomotives is ES64U4-G. A fifth locomotive (183 005) has been in service since November 2009, and will be required from December 2009 for the additional three pairs of express trains between Munich and Regensburg.

At the end of August 2013, AWT and Siemens signed the purchase agreement for three locomotives for use in international freight transport. The vehicles are to be delivered by the end of 2013.

The Steiermarkbahn received a second ES64U4 from Siemens on June 12, 2015. The locomotive, which was previously used for ETCS measurement runs (183.717), is mainly used in freight traffic.

Two of the three 1216s owned by RTS , namely 1216 902 and 903, were rented to ÖBB until February 28, 2019. They were mainly used in cross-border freight traffic between Villach and Slovenia. In September 2019, RTS sold the 1216 902 and 903 to České dráhy .

World record

Record locomotive in Ingolstadt Hbf

On September 2, 2006, the locomotive 1216 050, which at that time was still owned by Siemens (and later operated by ÖBB as 1216 025), set a world record for conventional locomotives on the new Nuremberg – Ingolstadt line between Kinding and Allersberg on. In the first attempt it reached 344 km / h and in the second attempt 357 km / h and thus both times exceeded the record from 1955 of 331 km / h, then set by SNCF BB 9004 , which on the occasion of the Mulhouse Railway Museum to Kinding was brought. The approximately 3.7 million euro locomotive with which the record run was carried out is the 50th third-generation “Taurus” ordered by ÖBB. According to Siemens, neither the line nor the locomotive had been specially prepared. Only the driving voltage was slightly increased , as was the case with the record run of the ICE V , and the train protection systems were switched off. Minor modifications to the machine included the removal of the windshield wipers, the snow plows and the installation of measuring systems on the pantograph and two wheel sets.

A total of 19 companies were involved in the record run. The " International Society for Railway Transport " (IGE) entrusted with the implementation of the record run became, according to information at the world record celebration, the fastest private railway transport company (EVU) in the world.

Until 2008, the locomotive was still used in test runs in various countries, including repeatedly on the high-speed line HSL Zuid ( high-speed line Schiphol – Antwerp ) in the Netherlands. The machine was handed over to the ÖBB on May 25, 2008. It has been in use as ÖBB 1216 025 since June 23, 2008.
