Saint-Ferreol is a French commune in the department of Haute-Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes .
geography
Saint-Ferréol is located at 517 m , north of Faverges , about 13 kilometers north-northwest of the city of Albertville (as the crow flies). The former farming village stretches along the northern edge of the wide Faverges valley furrow, which separates the Bornes Alps in the north from the Bauges massif in the south, at the entrance to the upper part of the Chaise valley , at the southern foot of the Tournette massif .
The area of the 16.11 km² municipal area comprises a section of the Savoy Alps. The southern border lies in the middle of the here almost three km wide valley furrow, which extends from Lac d'Annecy to Ugine and was created by the ice age glaciers. At Saint-Ferréol, the chaise draws a distinctive arch. Coming from the east, it flows around the ridge of the Col de l'Epine in a deeply cut valley, steps out into the valley near the village and now turns again to the east to unite with the Arly at Ugine . In the north, the municipality extends to the Arclosan ridge (the Tournette ridge stretches to the south) with the peaks of Pointe de Chauriande ( 1801 m ), Crêt des Mouches ( 2032 m ) and Pointe de la Beccaz ( the highest elevation at 2041 m from Saint-Ferréol).
In addition to the actual town center, Saint-Ferréol has other hamlet settlements and farms, including:
- La Côte ( 640 m ) on the western slope of the Chaise valley
- Les Combes ( 800 m ) on the western slope of the Chaise valley
- Nantbellet ( 975 m ) on a small plateau on the ridge of the Col de l'Epine

history
The municipality of Saint-Ferréol was already populated in pre-Christian times and during Roman times.
The place was first mentioned in the 12th century. In the past, copper and coal mines were exploited near Saint-Ferréol.
Attractions
The parish church of Saint-Ferréol was built in the Sardinian style in the 19th century. In the old town center, numerous houses in the typical Savoyard style have been preserved. Also worth seeing are the large paddle wheel in the village, which once powered a sawmill with its water power, and the Notre Dame de Grâce chapel in the hamlet of Nantbellet.

With 867 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Saint-Ferréol is one of the small communities in the Haute-Savoie department. In the course of the 19th and 20th centuries, the number of inhabitants decreased continuously due to strong emigration (in 1861 there were still 838 inhabitants in Saint-Ferréol). Since the beginning of the 1960s, however, a significant increase in population has been recorded.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Saint-Ferréol was a predominantly agricultural village. Today there are various small and medium-sized businesses, including two sawmills. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.
The village is very well developed in terms of traffic. It is located near the main road N508 (Annecy-Albertville) on a departmental road that leads from Faverges over the Col du Marais to Thônes . The closest connection to the A430 motorway is around 20 km away.
