Sale ( Piedmontese Sal or Sale ) is a municipality with 3994 (as of December 31, 2019) inhabitants in the Italian province of Alessandria (AL), Piedmont region .

The neighboring municipalities are Alessandria , Alluvioni Cambiò , Castelnuovo Scrivia , Guazzora , Isola Sant'Antonio , Piovera and Tortona .

The place is at an altitude of 83 m above sea level at the confluence of the Tanaro and the Po . The municipality covers an area of ​​44.72 km².

history

Originally owned by the Prince of Tortona , the place fought on their side during the war against the rulers of Pavia . The peace negotiations took place in 1165 in the church of Santa Maria e San Siro in Sale. This date also marks the first documented mention of the place.

The medieval church of Santa Maria e San Siro (see the history section) was renovated between the 14th and 15th centuries and equipped with three gothic style portals . The facade was changed again in the 18th century, the frescoes in the interior are by Lombard artists of the 15th century.
