Shazk ( Russian Шацк ) is a small town in the Ryazan Oblast ( Russia ) with 6561 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The city is located about 200 km southeast of the Oblast capital Ryazan on the Shacha , a left tributary of the Zna in the river system of the Volga .
Shazk is the administrative center of the Shazki Rajon named after him .
history
The place was built in 1553 as a fortified military post on the then southeastern border of the Russian state and was part of the defense line named after the river and place ( Schazkaja sasseka ). Initially the place was called Shazki Gorodok ( Shacha town after the river; name of Finno-Ugric origin).
In 1774 the inhabitants of the village rose up on the side of the peasants during the Pugachev uprising .
In 1779 the city charter was awarded as the administrative center of a district ( Ujesds ) of the Tambov governorate .
In the 18th and 19th centuries, the city was an important trading center for hemp fabrics, but subsequently lost its economic importance, as a result of which the population halved in the course of the 20th century.
In 1923 Shazk came to the Ryazan Governorate , from which the Oblast later emerged.

Culture and sights
The ensemble of the Cherneyev Nikolai Monastery ( Чернеево-Никольский монастырь / Tschernejewo-Nikolski monastyr) from the 17th to 19th centuries is located in the village of Starochernejewo, 18 kilometers from Schazk .
In the village of Schelannoje there has been a local museum of the Shazk district since 1968.
Economy and Infrastructure
In Schazk there are companies in the textile and food industry (meat processing company Schazkmjaso ). The Jambirnski limestone quarry is located nearby .
Nearest railway station is 30 kilometers away Nischnemalzewo along the route Moscow -Rjasan- Ruzayevka - Syzran .
The M5 Moscow – Ryazan – Samara – Chelyabinsk road runs through Shazk , from which the A143 branches off via Morschansk to Tambov and the regional road R124 to Kassimow .
