Schmelze is a small district of the municipality of Eitorf at the confluence of the northern Schmelzbach in the Sieg .

location

Schmelze used to be between the districts of Hombach and Bourauel , which today both belong to the main town of Eitorf. State roads 86 and 87 meet here . A subsequent small settlement in the Überbuschbachtal is Hatzfeld .

history

In the Middle Ages there was only the Hombacher mill here . A small copper ore mine was probably operated here in the Middle Ages, at the latest since the end of the 18th century . From 1856 ore was mined again, which then made a smelter necessary, which gave the place smelt its name. The Hatzfeld mine was operated for the last time in 1889 . The meltdown is particularly noticeable today through the Villa Kayser located on the Sieg.

Villa Kayser

In 1891, the royal purveyor to the court for valuable pewter items, Engelbert Kayser, had a representative hunting lodge built here on the Sieg, based on plans by his brother Heinrich Joseph Kayser . He leased the surrounding hunt and spent the summer months there with his family and invited friends and artists to hunt. In 1910 he had a studio added. Engelbert Kayser died in his hunting lodge on September 3, 1911, but the villa, which was completely renovated in 2014/15, is still owned by the family today.

Residents

From 1816 to 1934, Schmelze belonged to the municipality of Merten .

In 1845, Schmelze was a water mill with 9 Catholic residents.

In 1885 the place had three households and 12 residents.

In 1901 the court actuary Hermann Krüger and the miller Heinrich Langel lived in the smelter .

In 1910 the woodworker Wilhelm Ferier, the merchant Engelbert Kayser (phone 9), the driver Fritz Lier, the woodworker Anton Löhr and day laborer Heinrich Löhr, day laborer Franz Peter Rödder, gardener Jakob Schafhausen and miller and baker Karl Schrödter were all listed here.
