geography

Schmira is located southwest of Erfurt city center in a valley basin on the slope of the Alacher Muschelkalkplateau, which is drained towards the old town. The area around the village is free of forests and shaped by the landscape of the Thuringian Basin . Schmira consists of the old village Schmira in the west and the Schmira settlement in the east, which is directly adjacent to the Brühlervorstadt .

Neighboring villages are Frienstedt in the west, Bindersleben in the north, Hochheim in the east and Bischleben-Stedten in the south.

history

Schmira was first mentioned in a document in 1243. Remains of the monastery walls to the west of today's church indicate that the village was founded before this time. The names Smyre and Smire can be traced back for centuries. In 1280, Günter von Schmira, together with Heinrich von Kirchberg and the doctor Konrad von Herbsleben, was mentioned as a witness in a document from the Kapellendorf monastery for Fulda.

Until 1665 the village belonged to the Saxon property ( Wettiner and Ernestiner ), then like the city of Erfurt to Kurmainz . However, Erfurt was already a feudal man in Schmira from 1485. In an administrative reform of the Erfurt state , Schmira was assigned to the Alach office in 1706 . After secularization in 1803, the village came to Prussia together with Erfurt , where it remained until 1945.

The place was occupied by US troops around April 10, 1945 , relieved by the Red Army at the beginning of July . Schmira became part of the Soviet occupation zone and, from 1949, the GDR .

On July 1, 1950, Schmira was incorporated into Erfurt.
