Senior ticket
Senior tickets are tickets for passengers with a certain minimum age , which is usually between 60 and 65 years , depending on the transport association offering, offered in public and long-distance transport at a favorable special rate . In some countries there are additional discounts for people aged 70 and over.
Examples of senior citizens' tickets in Germany
The German railway offers guests over 60 years reduced BahnCard 25 for seniors in two versions (2nd class 36,90 Euro, 1st class 72,90 euros). A reduced BahnCard 50 for seniors is also available (2nd class 114 euros, 1st class 226 euros).
Bad Wiessee
From 2020, seniors aged 65 and over living in Bad Wiessee will be able to travel free of charge in the "Oberland" tariff zone of the Upper Bavaria regional traffic. For this purpose, a corresponding "Silver Ager Card" is issued.
Berlin and Brandenburg
The Verkehrsverbund Berlin-Brandenburg (VBB), which includes around 40 other transport companies in the state of Brandenburg in addition to the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) , offers a senior citizens ticket VBB-Abo 65plus , which can be purchased by people aged 65 and over. It is only available with an annual subscription (which can be canceled at any time) and currently (2019) costs 51 euros per month for monthly payments and 593 euros per year for one-off payments. A VBB customer card is issued upon purchase, for which a photo is required (or can be made in some customer centers). The senior citizen's ticket is valid around the clock without blocking times and offers discounts at a number of excursion destinations and event locations via a bonus booklet. The VBB subscription 65plus is valid for the entire area of the VBB , both in Berlin and in the whole of Brandenburg . The VBB transition cards for the use of 1st carriage class can be used in addition.
In the cities of Brandenburg / Havel , Cottbus and Frankfurt / Oder , seniors aged 65 and over can use local transport for one year at a price of 340 euros with the "VBB-Abo 65vorOrt".
Bielefeld
In Bielefeld (moBiel GmbH) there is a special subscription that allows people over the age of 60 to take an additional adult (no age limit) with them at any time of the day (see also the section on special offers below).
Chemnitz
In the Chemnitzer traffic corporation seniors can purchase a monthly pass for 49 euros from 63 years. This applies to the entire Central Saxony transport association .
Dresden
The Dresdner Verkehrsbetriebe offer discounted day tickets for seniors aged 60 and over, but not discounted monthly tickets or single tickets.
Grimma
Since August 1, 2019, there has been a senior ticket "ABO Aktiv" for the city traffic of Grimma at a price of 19.90 euros / month (from 65 years).
Hamburg
The HVV offers a senior ticket (from 63 years) for the greater Hamburg area at a price of 64.00 euros per month. In the annual subscription, the price drops to 52.50 euros per month (as of 2019). The senior citizen ticket has been valid without time restrictions since December 15, 2019 - the previous blocking period (Monday to Friday 6 a.m. to 9 a.m.) no longer applies.
Hanover
The üstra offers a senior ticket (63 years), the "Mobilcard 63plus" for the city category Hannover at a price of 50 euros per month. In the annual subscription, the price drops to 42.50 euros per month.
Hegau-Bodensee
In the Hegau-Bodensee transport association , seniors aged 65 and over receive a network-wide senior citizen ticket for 45 euros / month (only available with a subscription).
Hesse
Since January 1, 2020, there has been a nationwide senior citizen's ticket for people aged 65 and over at a price of 365 euros per year (for a one-off payment - 31 euros per month for monthly payments). However, it does not apply on working days until 9 a.m. There is also a comfort version for 625 euros, without a blocking period, with 1st class usage rights and various transport rights. The ticket is also partially valid in the neighboring areas of the surrounding federal states, for example in Mainz .
Karlsruhe
Seniors aged 65 and over and pensioners aged 60 and over receive the monthly ticket for the KVV at a reduced price.
Kiel
The Kieler Verkehrsgesellschaft offers seniors from 65 years of age the opportunity to purchase a senior citizen ticket as an annual subscription. This costs 37.44 euros per month and is not valid between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. (except on Sundays and public holidays).
Constancy
The Stadtwerke Konstanz offer an annual pass subscription for persons aged 65 years. It costs 36.37 euros per month.
Cologne, Bonn, Aachen
The VRS offers a transferable senior card for seniors aged 60 and over, the Aktiv60Ticket. It is only available with an annual subscription. The price depends on the number of cities traveled. On weekends and every day from 7 p.m. there is a possibility to take an additional adult (from 14 years) or a bicycle with you. Grandchildren can also be taken along. The area of validity extends to the entire VRS network at the weekend. There is a similar offer at the AVV in Aachen.
Leipzig / Halle
In the Mitteldeutscher Verkehrsverbund (Central German Transport Association) , people aged 65 and over can purchase a network-wide senior citizen ticket as a monthly ticket for EUR 58 to EUR 64.50 (depending on where they live). However, this ticket is more expensive than a normal monthly ticket for Leipzig or Halle.
Magdeburg
The Magdeburg transport companies offer a senior monthly pass by subscription for 45 euros (65 years).
Munich
The MVV offers a transferable monthly card for people aged 65 and over in the form of the Isarcard65. The Isarcard 65 costs EUR 46.40 for the city of Munich (tariff zone M). The Isarcard60, available before the tariff reform in December 2019, was available to people aged 60 and over. In contrast to the Isarcard65, however, it was not fully usable - there was a blocking time (Monday to Friday from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m.).
Muenster
The Stadtwerke Münster offer a senior citizen ticket Subscription for individuals 60 years under the name "60plusAbo". This costs 31 euros a month. It can only be used from 8 a.m. Monday to Friday. A ticket called "8UhrAbo", identical in performance and price, is available to customers of all ages.
Upper Lusatia-Lower Silesia
The ZVON offers 65s to a composite wide senior ticket for 38 euros by subscription. It is also available without a subscription for 47 euros. There are no time restrictions.
Osnabrück
The Stadtwerke Osnabrück offer a senior ticket (63plusAbo) for people over 63 years. This is only available by subscription and costs (as of December 2019) 30 euros.
Radolfzell
In Radolfzell there is a senior ticket for people aged 60 and over. It costs 31 euros per month or 310 euros for a year.
Rostock
In the Rostock Tramway AG seniors can purchase the Mobil60 ticket for 47 euros from 60 years. This does not apply on working days between 3 a.m. and 8 a.m.
Ruhr area, Lower Rhine
The “BärenTicket” offer with a minimum age of 60 has existed in the VRR for years. This annual subscription is offered for two large sub-networks or the entire Rhine-Ruhr network. It enables 1st class travel on all regional trains and S-Bahn trains. On weekends and every day from 7 p.m., an additional adult or three children under the age of 15 can be taken along. Taking bicycles with you is free.
Stuttgart
The VVS offers a senior citizen ticket, which can be purchased by pensioners aged 60 and over and generally by anyone aged 65 and over. The ticket is not transferable. It costs 49.20 euros as a monthly ticket and 41 euros per month with a one-year subscription. Subscribed tickets are valid for the entire VVS network, monthly tickets for three adjacent zones.
Southern Lower Saxony
The district council in Göttingen decided in March 2020 to introduce a senior citizen ticket for people aged 65 and over. This should cost 59 euros and be available from August 2020. The introduction was later postponed to 2021.
Thuringia
In the Central Thuringia transport association , which includes the cities of Gera , Gotha , Erfurt , Jena and Weimar and their surrounding areas, seniors aged 65 and over have the option of purchasing an association-wide senior monthly ticket ("Abo Mobil65") for 62 euros.
Tübingen
The Stadtwerke Tübingen offer a senior citizen ticket for people over 65, which is only available by subscription and monthly costs 38 euros (as of 2020). Pensioners can get the ticket from the age of 60.
Wolfratshausen
In July 2019, it was announced that from September 1, 2019, local seniors aged 65 and over will be able to use the Wolfratshausen city buses free of charge. For this they receive a monthly pass paid for by the municipality.
Wurzburg
The Würzburger Versorgungs- und Verkehrs-GmbH offers a "Abo65plus" for people aged 65 and over. This means that public transport in Würzburg can be used for EUR 26.90 per month. The subscription is not valid from Monday to Friday between 3 a.m. and 9 a.m. (except during school holidays).
Senior tickets outside of Germany
A comparison of the offers and the economic background is not always possible, as there are major differences in the organizational structure of local public transport , financing and cost recovery in different countries . Belgium
Seniors aged 65 and over can use the railroad throughout the country for one calendar day with the Seniors Ticket for € 7.20. However, this does not apply on working days until 9 a.m.
Seniors aged 65 and over can purchase an annual pass for EUR 60 (regular price EUR 499) from the Brussels transport company Société des Transports Intercommunaux de Bruxelles / Maatschappij voor het Intercommunaal Vervoer te Brussel .
Bulgaria
People aged 68 and over can get a monthly ticket for Sofia public transport for BGN 8 (approx. 4 euros).
At the Bulgarian railway company Balgarski Darschawni Schelesnizi , people with proof of retirement from a certain age (women 60 years and 8 months, men 63 years and 8 months) receive a senior citizen's pass for a BGN, with which they receive a permanent 50% fare reduction.
Estonia
In Tallinn, public transport can be used free of charge by anyone aged 65 or over living in Estonia.
At the Estonian railway company Elron , people aged 65 and over receive a 30% discount on all tickets.
France
People aged 60 and over can purchase the "Carte Avantage Senior" for 49 euros from the French railway company SNCF . This gives you a 30% discount on train tickets for one year.
Finland
With the Finnish railway company VR-Yhtymä , seniors aged 65 and over receive a 20% discount.
India
Indian Railways offers a discount for seniors aged 58/60 years (women / men). This is 50/40 percent.
Ireland
People aged 66 and over living in Ireland can obtain a Free Travel Card which allows most public transport in Ireland to be used for free.
Italy
In South Tyrol there is the "South Tyrol Pass 65+", a special variant of the South Tyrol Pass for seniors (from 65 years of age). While the fares for users of the Südtirol Pass are otherwise staggered according to the number of kilometers driven (with each threshold that is reached within a year, the kilometer tariff becomes cheaper), there are fixed prices for senior citizens: from 65 years of age 150 euros per year, from 70 years of age 75 Euros and from 75 years of age 20 euros (as of 01/2020).
Israel
With the Israeli bus company Egged , Israeli citizens aged 60 or 65 (women / men) receive a 50% discount.
Canada
At the Société de transport de Montréal , people aged 65 and over receive discounted tickets if they have an OPUS card with a photo. For example, a monthly ticket is reduced by approx. 40% to 52 CAD (approx. 35.60 euros, as of September 2019).
Liechtenstein
When Liechtenstein Bus , the only transport providers Liechtenstein, pensioners benefit from 64 years a discount on season tickets - that costs about the nationwide annual pass 260 instead of 340 Swiss francs.
Lithuania
Seniors aged 70 and over have a 50% discount on the Lithuanian railway company Lietuvos Gelezinkeliai and 80% for those aged 80 and over. Seniors over 70 years of age have 80% discount on city transport in Vilnius . B. a monthly ticket costs 5.80 euros.
Luxembourg
People aged 60 and over could purchase an annual pass ("Seniorekaart") for all public transport in Luxembourg ( only valid in 2nd class in the Société Nationale des Chemins de Fer Luxembourgeois ) for 100 euros. This card was no longer available on February 29, 2020, as the general free public transport - except for 1st class tickets - was introduced on this day.
Montenegro
Seniors aged 60 and over receive a 30% discount at the Montenegrin railway company Željeznica Crne Gore . People aged 75 and over travel free. A K-5 ID card is required for this. This costs 5 euros and is valid for 2 years.
Netherlands
Seniors aged 65 and over can purchase a discounted day ticket for local public transport in Rotterdam.

Norway
Seniors aged 67 and over receive a 50% discount from the Norwegian railway company Norge Statsbaner .
Seniors (aged 67 and over) receive all tickets (single, daily, weekly, monthly and annual tickets) at half price on local public transport in Oslo .
Austria
With the Austrian railway company ÖBB , senior citizens aged 64 and over receive a Vorteilscard for 29 euros a year, with which tickets can be purchased up to 50% cheaper.
The introduction of the 1-2-3 ticket was announced for 2021 , with which the railroad and local public transport can be used nationwide. For seniors it should cost 820 euros a year.
In the state of Salzburg there is an "Edelweißticket" for everyone over 64 years of age. This is valid nationwide for all means of transport and costs 299 euros per year or 25 euros per month with monthly debit.
In the Styrian Transport Association there is a 38% discount on presentation of an ÖBB Vorteilscard "Seniors". There is also such a regulation in the Verkehrsverbund Ost-Region .
The Wiener Linien Seniors can from 64 years an annual ticket for 235 euros (one-off payment) acquire, so with about 36% discount. Tickets for one or two journeys are also offered with senior discounts. An ÖBB Vorteilscard is not required for this.
Poland
Seniors aged 65 and over can purchase an annual pass for 50 PLN (approx. 12 euros) from the Warsaw Transport Authority (ZTM). Seniors aged 70 and over travel free. Free travel for people over the age of 70 is also available in many other large Polish cities, in Lublin even from the age of 65. In Wroclaw the age limit is decreasing every year - currently (2020) it is 67 years and will decrease to 65 years by 2022.
Intercity trains from PKP Intercity can be used by seniors aged 60 and over with a 30% discount.
Portugal
Seniors aged 65 and over only pay half the fare with the Portuguese railway company Comboios de Portugal .
Sweden
Seniors aged 65 and over receive a 10% discount at the Swedish railway company Statens Järnvägar .
In Stockholm, people aged 65 and over receive around 30% discount on all tickets. A single ticket costs z. B. instead of 44 SEK (4.30 euros) 30 SEK (approx. 2.90 euros).
Switzerland
In the Verkehrsverbund Tarifverbund Nordwestschweiz , a senior and IV-U subscription is offered as a monthly or annual subscription. This can be used from 64 years (women) or 65 years (men).
The general ticket of the Swiss Federal Railways received seniors aged 64 or 65 years (women / men) about 25% cheaper.
Slovakia
The Slovak railway Železničná spoločnosť Slovensko transports everyone over 63 years of age free of charge. However, a free travel pass must be issued at a ticket office beforehand. In Bratislava, people aged 63 and over pay half the price for public transport tickets.
Slovenia
The Slovenian railway company Slovenske železnice offers seniors from 60 years of age a "Seniors Railcard" at a price of 7 euros. This gives you a 30 to 50% discount on routes within Slovenia and 25 to 30% on cross-border connections for a year.
Spain
With the Spanish railway company RENFE , seniors (aged 60 and over) receive the "Tarjeta Dorada" for 6 euros, with which they receive between 25% and 50% discount on the regular fare.
Czech Republic
Seniors from 65 to 69 years of age travel at half price in Prague if they purchase a "PID senior pass" beforehand. This costs 20 CZK (approx. 80 cents). Seniors who are at least 70 years of age travel free of charge if they can identify themselves with an identity card from an EU country.
In Brno , people aged 70 and over have free travel on public transport - however, a senior citizen's pass must be purchased beforehand. This costs 30 CZK (approx. 1.20 euros).
With the Czech railway company České dráhy , people aged 65 and over have received a 75% discount on single tickets and return tickets since September 1, 2018.
Hungary
In Hungary, local and long-distance transport can generally be used free of charge by EU citizens aged 65 and over. In public transport from Budapest, this also applies to citizens of Switzerland.
United Kingdom
At National Rail , people aged 60 and over can purchase a Senior Railcard at a price of 30 pounds (approx. 33.30 euros), which, with minor restrictions, gives you a 1/3 discount on the regular fare for a year. With a 3 year validity, the card costs £ 70.
Seniors aged 60 and over who live in London receive the Oyster card for free on public transport.
Residents of Northern Ireland get free travel on buses and trains there with the 60+ SmartPass from the age of 60 . Seniors aged 65 and over living in Northern Ireland receive a Senior (65+) SmartPass , which, unlike the 60+ SmartPass, is also valid in the Republic of Ireland. Both passes are free.
Residents of Scotland receive the National Entitlement Card from the age of 60 , with which they can use all urban buses and coaches in Scotland for free. Rail, underground and ferry journeys are discounted.
In England and Wales, too, there are bus passes for seniors that give them free travel. In Wales the minimum age is 60 years old, in England it is set at the retirement age for women depending on the date of birth (valid for both sexes, between 60 and 67 years of age).
United States
In the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority , which operates the local buses in Los Angeles, pensioners benefit from 62 years a significant discount - they pay $ 20 instead of the normal $ 100 for a 30-day card.
special offers
A senior citizen ticket can also be offered in the form of a regular season ticket with additional conditions. For example, there is a special subscription in Bielefeld ( moBiel GmbH) with which people over 60 years of age can take an additional adult (without age restriction) with them at any time of the day. The offer arose from the experience that many older people are unsure and prefer to travel with an escort. This "Premium Abo 60 plus" can be transferred to other people over 60, which means that the risk of underuse e.g. B. minimized due to illness (minimum contract period 12 months).
