Shake It Off is a song by Mariah Carey . It was produced by her, Jermaine Dupri , Bryan-Michael Cox and Johntá Austin for Carey's tenth studio album The Emancipation of Mimi from 2005 and was released on July 12, 2005 in the USA as the third single on the album.

Publication and reviews

Shake It Off was released in the US on July 12, 2005 as a CD single and download. The remix version of the song was produced by DJ Clue - who produced the remix for Carey's previous single, We Belong Together - and guest rappers Jay-Z and Young Jeezy . It was released as a download in the US on July 20, 2005.

About.com's Bill Lamb said Shake It Off was a flop compared to the previous single and one of Mariah Carey's worse songs. Dan Gennoe from Yahoo! Music called the song " Usher- like", Sal Cinquemani from Slant Magazine described Shake It Off as "Usher in the manner of Dupri" and declared the song as "the worst song on the album [...] in which Mariah Carey rather imitates other singers, than paying attention to the quality of the song ”. The Blender magazine placed it at number 38 of the 100 best songs in 2005.

Commercial win

In the US, Shake It Off debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at number 66, the highest debut of release week. In the 7th week in the charts, the song reached number 2 behind Carey's successful single We Belong Together . This made Carey the first female artist to have two songs in the top two spots on the Billboard Hot 100. Shake It Off was # 2 for six weeks after We Belong Together dropped from # 1; it was behind Kanye West's number one hit Gold Digger . It stayed on the Billboard Hot 100 for 26 weeks. The song was ranked 15th on Billboard Magazine's 2005 Hot 100 charts.

The song failed to repeat the success of We Belong Together outside of the US . He reached the top five in New Zealand and 6th in Australia and as a double A-side with the song Get Your Number 9th in Great Britain and Ireland, as well as the top twenty in several other countries.

Music video

The music video was directed by Jake Nava . The video begins with Carey and her boyfriend whom she informs that she wants to break up with him. She packs her things, leaves the villa and goes to a restaurant. There she meets Chris Tucker , with whom she wants to start a relationship. They walk to the car and Chris Tucker is surrounded by several women who dance for him. Carey attends a football match where she continues singing her song on the field. The video includes a cameo by a young girl who also appeared in the music video for Carey's 1995 single Fantasy , and a cameo by Boo Boo Stewart. The video was nominated in the " Best R&B Video " category at the 2006 MTV Video Music Awards .
