The article about the ski jumping season 1977/78 is an overview of the most important ski jumping competitions of the winter sports season 1977/78. Outstanding competitions this season were the Four Hills Tournament and the Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti, Finland . At both events, the ski jumping community experienced an emotional rollercoaster. In the Four Hills Tournament, for the first time in the history of the tour, the competition had to be canceled after the first round due to the weather at the opening event in Oberstdorf. The two-time tour winner Jochen Danneberg , who was ahead after two competitions , fell during training on the Bergisel and had to travel home. Thus, the Finn Kari Ylianttila came to his somewhat surprising tour victory and was therefore one of the favorites for the World Championships. But the Finn was also unlucky. He fell badly while exercising and broke his ankle. Nevertheless, the Finns were able to celebrate a winner at the world championships in their own country, Tapio Räisänen became world champion on the large hill, albeit very tightly. With 3 medals in the 2 jumping competitions, the GDR team showed its strength again after the Aschenbach era. Matthias Buse became world champion on the normal hill. The third big jumping nation this season, Austria, got off to a difficult start. Olympic champion Karl Schnabl was injured, exceptional talent Toni Innauer struggled to catch up after his injury. Alois Lipburger jumped into the breach. After the Four Hills Tournament, where the Austria Eagles still came under “also ran”, he won several podium places in international competitions and surprisingly won silver on the large hill at the World Championships.
