Slavyanka ( Russian Славя́нка ) is an urban-type settlement in the Primorye region ( Russia ) with 14,036 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

The settlement is located in the Far East of Russia on the bay of the same name, a natural harbor on the west coast of the Peter the Great Bay of the Sea of Japan , about 50 kilometers (as the crow flies) southwest of the regional capital Vladivostok . By land around the Amur Bay, as the western part of the Peter the Great Bay is called, the distance to Vladivostok is about 200 kilometers.

To the south of the settlement, a narrow promontory protrudes about 10 kilometers into the sea, which separates the Slavyanka Bay from the Baklan Bay and rises to 177 m above sea level. At the top is Cape Brjussa (Bruce) with the lighthouse Bjusse (Busse) built in 1911 .

Slavyanka is the administrative center of the Rajons Khasan .

The place has its origins in a military post that was established shortly after the Primorye area was annexed to the Russian Empire according to the Treaty of Aigun of 1858 in 1861. The name Post Slawjanski (“Slavyanka post”) was derived from the Russian name of the bay of Slavyanka (“ Slavic ”) .

For several decades the place was exclusively a military base until civilians also settled and it was given its current name in 1889. A telegraph station was built at the beginning of the 1890s.

On January 4, 1926, Slavyanka became the administrative center of the newly founded Possjet Rajon , but in 1928 it was relocated to the village of Novokijewskoje (now the Kraskino settlement ), which is further south-west like Possjet . On April 29, 1943, Slavyanka received urban-type settlement status.

In October 1971, Slavyanka, meanwhile the largest place in the area, was again the district administrative center.

Economy and Infrastructure

Slavyanka has a seaport , a shipyard and a fishing port with a fish processing plant.

A few kilometers west of the settlement passes the Baranowski – Chassan railway, which branches off the Trans-Siberian Railway between Ussuriysk and Vladivostok and leads to the North Korean border at Chassan . Slavyanka's Bamburowo passenger station is on the route. From Bamburowo a 13-kilometer freight connection line leads directly to Slavyanka to the Bljucher station , named after the Marshal of the Soviet Union Vasily Blucher (Russian Bljucher ).

The A189 highway , also to the North Korean border, bypasses the town to the west. Buses to Vladivostok run on it.

Between Vladivostok and Slavyanka operate year-round ferries that cover the distance in just under 2 hours and 40 minutes, supplemented in summer by a faster hydrofoil of the type "Kometa" .
