The game for third place was also played by New Zealand and South Africa in 1994 and 1996 , but New Zealand prevailed against South Africa this year. Germany took 5th place, Switzerland reached 13th place. Austria finished the tournament in 20th place on its debut.

mode

The participating teams were drawn into five groups according to their results from the last competition for the preliminary round. Round-robin mode was used within the groups . The three best-placed teams in groups A and B and the winners of groups C and D advanced to the quarter-finals. The bottom of the group in groups A and B, the runners-up and thirds in groups C and D and the two best-placed teams in group E played for places 9 to 16. The bottom of groups in groups C and D as well as the third, fourth and fifth teams Group E played in round robin mode for places 17 to 21.

All teams consisted of a minimum of three and a maximum of four players who had to be reported in the order of their skill level. Three individual games were played per encounter. A team won if its players could win two of the individual games. The order in which the individual games were played was independent of the order in which the players entered.
