Stefan Bachmann (born July 1, 1966 in Zurich ) is a Swiss theater director and has been director of the Schauspiel Köln since September 1, 2013 .

education

From 1986 to 1988 Stefan Bachmann studied German and general literature at the University of Zurich . In 1987 he was an intern at the Schauspielhaus Zürich in Der long Abschied nach Raymond Chandler (directed by Gerd Heinz ) and he wrote newspaper articles for the Tages-Anzeiger and Die Weltwoche . This was followed by traineeships in feature films and advertising films. In 1988/89 he was interned with Luc Bondy at the Schaubühne Berlin . In 1989 he moved to Berlin and began studying German, theater and religious studies. He was a member of the student theater Studiobühne at the Free University and, together with Ricarda Beilharz , Thomas Jonigk and Lars-Ole Walburg, co-founded the Affekt theater . With productions such as Shakespeare's Titus Andronicus (1992), Aristophanes ' Lysistrate (1993), Kleist's Penthesilea (1994) or Goethe's Lila, this became known beyond the independent theater scene in Berlin.

From 1993 he worked as a freelance theater director. Stefan Bachmann has staged at the Schauspiel Bonn (1994), at the Volksbühne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz Berlin ( Marivaux ' The False Maid 1994), at the Zürcher Theater am Neumarkt ( Goethe's Wahlverwandschaften 1995) and at the Deutsches Schauspielhaus Hamburg ( Corneille's Triumph der Illusions 1997). In 1996 the critics voted him Young Director of the Year. In 1998 he became acting director at the Theater Basel and only one year later it was named Theater of the Year by Theater heute . Stefan Bachmann has so far been represented with three productions at the Berlin Theatertreffen (1996, 1997 and 2000). Bachmann remained in Basel as acting director until the end of the 2002/2003 season. Then he worked again as a freelance director. His work has now taken him to the Burgtheater in Vienna and the Deutsches Theater in Berlin. In 2006/2007 he mainly directed at the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus and the Berlin Gorki Theater . In 2008 Stefan Bachmann was awarded the Nestroy Theater Prize for his directorial performance in the Akademietheater production of Wajdi Mouawad's Burns . With the approval of the Main Committee of the City of Cologne on November 7, 2011, Bachmann has been the artistic director of the Cologne Theater since September 1, 2013 . He has the same budget as his predecessor Karin Beier . At the beginning of November 2017, Bachmann extended his contract until the end of the 2020/21 season. Originally, Bachmann wanted to stay in Cologne for at least three more seasons after the drama moved into the renovated house on Kleiner Offenbachplatz, which had not yet been scheduled. Bachmann is currently confronted with allegations of bullying. On May 23, 2019, Bachmann extended his contract until 2023.

Private

Stefan Bachmann is married to the theater actress Melanie Kretschmann , with whom he also works. The couple have three sons and one daughter.
