Australian Open

After Graf had not participated in the Australian Open for the last two years, she came back in 1988 as the world's number one. Graf lost only 13 games in the first four rounds. Only Catarina Lindqvist put up a little more resistance in the second set in the round of 16, but Graf still won 7: 5. The defending champion Hana Mandlíková faced her in the quarter-finals, who lost 6-2 and 6-2. In the semifinals against Claudia Kohde-Kilsch it went fast too, she defeated the German after 45 minutes with 6: 2 and 6: 3. Her final opponent was Chris Evert , who prevailed against Martina Navrátilová in her semifinals . There was a premiere in the final. After the game was interrupted due to a rain shower in a 2-1 lead for Graf in the first set, it was decided after 90 minutes of interruption to close the roof in the new stadium. It was the first Grand Slam final to be played under a closed roof. Since Graf was the better indoor player, that was a clear advantage for her. The first set then went to Graf quickly 6: 1. In the second set it also looked like a quick set win for a long time, she quickly led 5: 1. But Evert increased and the set went into the tiebreak, which Graf won 7: 3. For Graf it was the first Australian Open title and the second Grand Slam success.

French Open

The French Open was similar to the Australian Open. She reached the semi-finals without much effort, until then she had only given up eleven games. Gabriela Sabatini was the one waiting there , against whom she had already lost two games this season. The first set clearly went 6: 3 to Graf. In the second, Sabatini came into play better, but Graf won 7: 6 3 in the tie-break . The final against Natallja Swerawa went down as the shortest Grand Slam final in history, which Graf won 6-0 and 6-0 after 32 minutes. The last time there was such a one-sided Grand Slam final was Wimbledon in 1911 , Swerawa won 13 points, 11 of which were due to Graf's mistakes. It was the second French Open title and the third Grand Slam title for Graf.

Wimbledon

She rushed through the laps on the sacred lawn at Wimbledon. Her first opponent Hu Na lost with the same result with which she won the French Open 6-0, 6-0. The next rounds also turned out to be easy tasks, Karine Quentrec (6: 2, 6: 0), Terry Phelps (6: 3, 6: 1), Mary Joe Fernández (6: 2, 6: 2), Pascale Paradis (6: 3, 6: 1) and Pam Shriver (6: 1, 6: 2) were unable to stop them on their way to the final. Now it was against Martina Navrátilová , who wanted to celebrate her ninth Wimbledon title and who had a positive 7: 3 record against Graf. After an hour and 33 minutes, Graf finished the match with a net scooter for himself to 5: 7, 6: 2, 6: 1. It was her first Wimbledon title.

US Open

When the US Open began, Graf had a record of 28 wins in a row. Up to the semi-finals it was a smooth walk through (5 wins, 10: 0 sets and 60:13 games). There it should go against Chris Evert , who could not compete because of a gastrointestinal flu and canceled her game in the morning. Her final opponent in the Louis Armstrong Stadium was Gabriela Sabatini , who gave her the only two defeats so far this season. Sabatini didn't make it easy for her in this match either and forced a third set, which Graf won straight away and won the game 6: 3, 3: 6 and 6: 1 at 3:14 p.m. local time.

In addition, she was the second player in the Open Era to win all four Grand Slam tournaments in one year. Margaret Court succeeded before her in 1970 .

Weathered Olympic Games Results Board (2006)

Graf traveled to the Olympic Games in Seoul as a tennis player who managed to complete a regular Grand Slam . Everyone expected the gold medal from her now. Four years earlier she had won the individual competition at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles , but this was a demonstration event for U-21 participants and medals were not distributed. Graf initially lived with the other participants in the athletes' village. But because the hype about her person was so great, she moved to a hotel. She was very tired from the stress of the last few weeks, so that she didn't expect much from herself. Except for the first set in the first game against Leila Mes'chi , she won the first two rounds smoothly. Only in the quarter-finals against Laryssa Savchenko was it a bigger challenge, because in the third set she was 1: 3 behind. After that, her opponent won no more game and Graf won the game 6: 2, 4: 6, and 6: 3. In the semi-finals she left her opponent Zina Garrison only two points and won 6: 2 and 6: 0. As in the US Open, she played against Gabriela Sabatini in the final . In this case Graf only needed two sets and won it 6: 3 and 6: 3.
