The Streetlife Festival is a street and environmental festival in Munich organized by the environmental organization Green City . It was first held in 2000, repeated in the following two years and has been held twice a year since 2003. Through the event, Green City would like to show its visitors alternative uses of urban space largely without vehicles. It has taken place on two weekend days since 2002 and has since extended over Odeonsplatz , Ludwigstrasse and parts of Leopoldstrasse . The Corso Leopold is followed by another street festival near the Siegestor at the Georgenstrasse intersection , which ends at Münchner Freiheit . Both festivals are visited by several hundred thousand people every year and are therefore well received by the population. The extensive road closures associated with this, however, led to controversial urban policy discussions in the early years.

history

Venue of the Streetlife Festival and Corso Leopold

On September 23, 2000, Munich participated as one of 56 cities in a Europe-wide car-free day . On this occasion, Green City , the General German Bicycle Club , the Bund Naturschutz in Bayern , the Kreisjugendring and the state capital Munich organized the Streetlife Festival for the first time. However, the event was only held on the Saturday after the Europe-wide car-free day in order to avoid disruption to rush hour traffic. The festival welcomed its visitors from 1 p.m. and 9 p.m. and stretched from Königsplatz to Odeonsplatz.

The second Streetlife Festival on September 22, 2001 lasted from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. and took place in the valley , on Marienplatz and between Marienplatz and Hochbrückenstraße, on Sparkassenstraße and Ledererstraße and from Dienerstraße to Landschaftstraße. However, due to the previous terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 , the event program was shortened.

The third Streetlife Festival lasted two consecutive days for the first time: It took place on September 14th and 15th, 2002 and was therefore organized independently of the car-free day for the first time. This avoids a schedule overlap with the Oktoberfest . The festivities took place on Ludwigstrasse, Leopoldstrasse up to the intersection of Georgenstrasse and on Odeonsplatz and stretched over 1.5 kilometers. Since then, this area has been used as a festival location. Corso Leopold took place north of the festival . The district committee of Schwabing-Freimann had pronounced to organize both festivals in the future twice a year on the Leopold and Ludwig road to the festival in 2002 for it. The decision has been implemented since 2003. In addition to Green City, the Munich district administration department and the department for health and the environment , the organization Schwabing extra , organizer of Corso Leopold, took part in the Streetlife Festival in 2002. In 2005, the initiators of Corso Leopold spoke out in favor of the bus station at Münchner Freiheit and to include two side streets in the festival mile. However, this would have led to problems with the diversion of car traffic and parking for residents.

Topics and goals

The Streetlife Festival began as an implementation of the Europe-wide car-free day and has followed a utopian approach ever since . Green City wants to show that it is possible to make urban space sensually tangible again and to actively shape it. Behind this is the long-term plan to redesign the city in such a way that the inhabitants not only live in the city, but that it is filled with life by the inhabitants. The festival has been held two weekends a year since 2002. It starts on Saturday afternoon and ends on Sunday evening, with a break during the night. The exact times can vary slightly from festival to festival.

The organizer, the Munich environmental organization Green City, wanted to promote the topic of "living space instead of car traffic" from the start and make the vision of a liveable Munich with sustainable urban development tangible and to inspire people for a conscious lifestyle . In the years that followed, the focus was increasingly on designing a road without traffic. Thematically, the festival revolves around environmental protection , mobility and urban design, with the redesign of public space, renewable energies and healthy living being the core themes. With the event, Green City is trying hardly to pollute the environment.

Bearers and sponsors

The main organizer is the Munich environmental protection organization Green City. The Department for Health and Environment of the City of Munich is co-organizer. The patron is Munich's Lord Mayor Dieter Reiter , who took over the task from his predecessor Christian Ude . Other organizations such as the district youth council also helped to organize the festival. In addition to the main media partner 95.5 Charivari , numerous other media companies support the event. The festival is also supported by public transport companies in Munich and other companies.

organization

Extensive road closures are necessary for the Streetlife Festival. Since there are also several regular bus services on Leopoldstrasse and Ludwigstrasse , there are numerous diversions in local public transport. The underground lines U3 and U6 are being strengthened. Passenger traffic will be widely diverted, and numerous parking spaces will be eliminated.

The city supported the festival financially until 2003. In 2002, for example, the city council made 76,000 euros available. From 2004 onwards, Green City began to focus more on sponsoring in order to no longer be dependent on city support. In 2007, Streetlife Festival and Corso Leopold jointly generated a total of around 250,000 euros. 90 percent of the income was spent on costs incurred, such as urban requirements, logistics and technical equipment. After Green City entered into a media partnership with radio station 95.5 Charivari in 2002, the radio station insisted that the non-profit radio project Radio Lora , which campaigns for ecological issues , had to stay away from the Streetlife Festival. At later festivals, however, Radio Lora was represented again.

Themed zones

The Streetlife Festival developed into a mixture of culture , cabaret and commerce on the street by 2003 . There were pubs and snack stands and numerous political parties and environmental protection organizations also posted themselves there. Alternatives to automobile traffic were also discussed. Music was played and street performers performed in numerous places. The development went so that the festival was divided into different areas. These can change from event to event. In spring 2004, a beach with a cocktail bar was tried out for the first time. Around 40 tons of sand were brought in for the repetition at the second festival in 2004.

At the 2015 Spring Festival, Green City planted the entire area around the Siegestor for the first time, creating a quiet island of around 2000 square meters. At the festivals in 2004 the main stage was still there. There were five different stages throughout the festival in 2016, on which different musical genres were presented. In 2014, in addition to chart music, evergreens , an acoustic session as well as indie and alternative programs were played.

Aside from lounge chairs, there are also skateboard ramps, children's trains and information stands usually available at the street festival. In the “ Barefoot Park ” you can test your sense of touch or relax in a “feel-good oasis”. Various sports competitions in the so-called “Ludwigstadion” on Ludwigstrasse are aimed at a younger audience. In the spring of 2015 the area was 200 meters long and included a skate course . Rare sports like electric wheelchair hockey have also been played and professional skateboarders and BMX riders put on shows.

There are also numerous stands with organic food on the festival site . In September 2004, an “organic world of experience” was organized for the first time on Odeonsplatz. It is an area in which organic food is in the foreground. In July 2006, the producer and consumer network Unser Land presented itself in an area where you could milk yourself and watch the mustard production . It was also possible to talk to organic farmers or buy organic food. In 2003 there was an exhibition for ecological agriculture in the Feldherrnhalle , which was supported with catering by the Federal Consumer Protection Ministry. In addition to show cooking, there was a small petting zoo.

Initiatives, actions and events

Michael Werner while setting the world record in September 2006

At numerous stands you can find out more about the topics of environmental protection , social institutions and civic engagement . In June 2011 around 200 exhibitors were represented at the Streetlife Festival and Corso Leopold, in May 2015 there were 150 at the Streetlife Festival alone. In 2002, at the first Streetlife Festival on Leopoldstrasse and Ludwigstrasse, there were around 200 initiatives.

At the festival in 2000, numerous activities such as parades and lectures took place. The official Streetlife parade led from Königsplatz to Odeonsplatz. The Kreisjugendring organized a children and youth festival on Königsplatz. Beer gardens, show stages and information stands were set up on Brienner Strasse and Karolinenplatz . Street musicians also took part. In addition, it was possible to test various means of transport as an alternative to the car with a combustion engine. At the second Streetlife Festival, numerous speakers gave lectures on future mobility in the Old Munich City Hall . Later, various environmentally friendly vehicles could be tried out. In addition to cycling or unicycling , there was also the opportunity in September 2010 to test electric cars .

The organizer, Green City, is also present at the Streetlife Festival: In June 2007, for example, the organization carried out a climate protection campaign with the Zero Degrees Plus campaign , in which 50,000 energy-saving lamps were distributed in exchange for a donation. The organization calculated that users would save 15,000 tons of carbon dioxide compared to normal light bulbs . In 2007, Green City collected around 2,500 signatures at the Streetlife Festival and the Tollwood Festival , calling on the state capital of Munich to take action against climate change .

In September 2004, the state capital of Munich banned the collection of signatures for citizens' petitions against resolutions of the city council . Liesa Siegelman, who was affected by the decision with the association Perspektive Münchner Freiheit , criticized the decision. Nevertheless, current political issues could be advertised at the Streetlife Festival, such as against the construction of the third runway at Munich Airport or in favor of a 30 km / h limit in inner cities.

In September 2006 the artist Michael Werner attempted a world record at the festival. He wanted to paint a picture 160 meters long within 28 hours. Werner successfully completed the attempt after 26.5 hours. A virulent topic was dealt with in 2015 with a panel discussion on the second main route . There were also literary stages and various competitions at the Streetlife Festival. The BVV Beach Cup 2008 , the beach volleyball tournament of the Bavarian Volleyball Association , took place there.

Visitor development

The police counted around 30,000 visitors to the first Streetlife Festival in 2000. However, in 2001 that number fell back to 8,000. In 2002, when the festival was held for the first time together with Corso Leopold on Ludwigstrasse and Leopoldstrasse, around 200,000 people came to the festival. Since the event has taken place on Leopoldstrasse, the number of visitors has varied widely in the six-digit range. The reason for this may be the weather: when it rained on the first day of the festival in June 2004, only 20,000 visitors came. The following day, around 100,000 came in sunshine. Heat can also be a reason for lower visitor numbers. For example, on the first day of the first Streetlife Festival in 2006, visitors didn't come until the evening when it got cooler.

According to the organizers, the Streetlife Festival is one of the largest environmental festivals in Europe and, according to an article in the Süddeutsche Zeitung from 2015, the largest street festival in Munich. By 2010, the number of visitors to the Streetlife Festival and Corso Leopold was more than 250,000. In June 2011, when 250,000 people came to the festival, around 40,000 visitors strolled simultaneously at the Streetlife Festival and Corso Leopold at peak times. More than 300,000 visitors could already be counted on one of the two festival weekends. The expected number of visitors for the 2005 Autumn Festival was given as 250,000. The organizer had the same expectation in 2012. In the meantime, Green City even expected around 350,000 visitors, for example for the first festival in 2008. However, the expectations were significantly below.

The Streetlife Festival in May 2014 attracted 350,000 visitors

Streetlife Festival and Corso Leopold

Transition from Corso Leopold to the Streetlife Festival in September 2016

Since the Streetlife Festival has been celebrated on Leopold and Ludwigstrasse, Corso Leopold has also taken place at the northern end of the street. Both festivals merge seamlessly a few meters north of Siegestor on Georgenstrasse. While the Streetlife Festival focuses in particular on the environment and sustainable mobility, Corso Leopold focuses on the topics of art and culture . In line with the focus of the content, the Streetlife Festival is supported by the environmental department , while the municipal cultural department on Corso Leopold is involved. The common theme is the design of public space. Both festivals together form a 2.3-kilometer promenade.

In parlance, both events are often referred to as one unit. Both the Streetlife Festival and Corso Leopold stand as a term for the double festival, which according to the Süddeutsche Zeitung had developed into the third largest event in Munich by the end of 2005. Only the Oktoberfest and the Tollwood Festival were bigger. By 2009, according to the same newspaper, the two festivals had even become the second largest event in the city after the Oktoberfest. At the end of 2005, a separation of the two events was discussed in Schwabing's local politics and it was proposed that the Streetlife Festival and Corso Leopold should be held within one year, with the profile of the event taking place more in the foreground. However, the organizers agreed to hold both festivals together in the future.

reception

media

The journalist Christiane Lutz wrote in September 2010, when the Streetlife Festival attracted numerous people despite the heat, that the event was “popular with Munich residents”. The journalist Miriam Montag also judged in May 2010 that the event "has developed into an integral part of Munich's annual program in recent years" and that it stands for "enjoying exercise, togetherness and environmental protection ".

The festival also gained in importance beyond the current reporting. In 2012, the event was included by Bayerischer Rundfunk as part of the content of the Telekolleg Sozialkunde . There it served as an example of non-party commitment by citizens, especially young people.

Florian Zick from the Süddeutsche Zeitung wrote in September 2010 that the Streetlife Festival and Corso Leopold form a “democratic street festival” that “complement” each other, so that “there is something for everyone”. As a result, “everything runs as stress-free as you might otherwise only imagine board elections in a bowling club” and “[no] a dispute, everything [is] harmonious”. He came to the conclusion that “in such an atmosphere […] one would also like to have a bit of eco-education”, and said that “[t] he demands […] are definitely capable of consensus: against genetic engineering in agriculture - and for ice cream made from goat's milk ”.

The journalist Jakob Wetzel noted in 2011 that although there is “a good mood everywhere”, “the information stands [...] have a hard time asserting themselves”. Bernd Kastner, also a journalist for the Süddeutsche Zeitung, recognized Wetzel's criticisms beforehand. He saw the reasons, among other things, in the fact that "[t] he music stages [...] are louder" and "the sausage stands smell more penetrating". At the same time, Kastner praised the organization. He wrote: “It's a sensation every time. The Autostadt Munich closes a large, long street to cars for two whole days - and yet public order does not collapse ”.

The media repeatedly praised the fact that the festival shows facets of Munich that go beyond all clichés and that visitors are actively involved in the action. Bernhard Kastner said in an article in the Süddeutsche Zeitung in 2014: “The world would be saved if it were always like this weekend up to the Münchner Freiheit . Good and fair, eco and chic […]. Munich completely different, every six months ”. In May 2015, the evening newspaper emphasized how positively this festival stands out from other major events: It is “not a mass party mile with junk food and passive droning”. The visitors are “the stars that everything revolves around. Space is made for them so that they can feel, smell, see, hear and taste experiences where otherwise the traffic is raging ”. The function of the festival for the expansion of Munich's image and its citizen-centered character were summed up in the sentence “[t] he Streetlife Festival shows how different Munich can be and how it can be actively shaped”.

Sponsor 95.5 Charivari's stage at the Streetlife Festival in September 2016

However, criticism of the organizer came from its own sponsor Charivari in the early years . After the radio station banned the non-profit radio station Lora from the festival, Lora managing director Dietmar Freitsmiedl said that Green City was shedding its "green roots" with the festival and that "visitor records " had a higher priority than the content. Hilmar Giesenregen, managing director of the sponsor Charivari, then confirmed Freitsmiedl's assumption. He said: "The Streetlife Festival is now definitely a commercial story" and justified the step to ban Lora from the festival. Nevertheless, Lora was later present again at the Streetlife Festival.

politics

In politics, the Streetlife Festival was the subject of controversy in its early years. When the environmental department decided at the beginning of 2002 to hold the festival on Leopoldstrasse and Ludwigstrasse , there were discussions about the scope of the event: While Joachim Lorenz called for the Greens to block extensive roads, the CSU advocated the least possible disruption to traffic. After the first Streetlife Festival on Ludwigstrasse and Leopoldstrasse, there were no major disruptions despite the closure of both streets. However, there were complaints from residents who found the noise too loud and from people who felt disabled or trapped in their surroundings while driving.

After numerous people appeared at the 2002 festival, the Green Party in the city council called for the festival to be held on Leopoldstrasse and Ludwigstrasse every month between May and September. In the following year, the CSU parliamentary group in the city council and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry criticized the event on Leopoldstrasse and Ludwigstrasse: In their opinion, the Streetlife Festival, among other things, resulted in "considerable impairment of economic activity and private transport ".

The development of the festival in the early years caused unease in politics. The CSU local politician Inge Linder said in 2007 that the Streetlife Festival is developing into a "private-commercial event". In 2003, the said district committee of Schwabing-Freimann made sure that the Streetlife Festival should return more to its roots as a "street party" again. CSU parliamentary group spokesman, Patric Wolf, wanted a stand and culture festival instead of the numerous stages. The committee chairman Werner Lederer-Piloty from the SPD was of the opinion that the visitor numbers speak for the festival, but one wants to avoid that the Streetlife Festival is too much like the Tollwood Festival.

The Streetlife Festival also gained in importance in connection with Munich's transport policy. In 2015, the proposal came up to largely push cars back from Ludwigstrasse. The Greens argued that the potential that Ludwigstrasse shows during the festival weekend should be used permanently. However, the detour routes came under criticism, especially from local residents. Karin Hiersemenzel , 2012 FDP spokeswoman in the Maxvorstadt district committee , said: "The detour proposed by the organizers [...] is neither reasonable nor practicable for the residents [...], since the access [...] is blocked by a network of one-way streets".
