Such a Shame is a song by Talk Talk from the year 1984 , that of Mark Hollis was written and produced by Tim Friese-Greene. It appeared on the album It's My Life .
history
For the lyrics, Mark Hollis was inspired by Luke Rhinehart 's book Der Würfler , which was one of his favorite books. In the text, which is kept linguistically simple, the protagonist reflects on his experiment in making important decisions by rolling the dice : Actually, it is a shame to evade responsibility in this way. Each eye on the cube stands for a different life plan. A new number should be rolled quickly - but the urge to want to change constantly is a shame. At some point the death number eight will be called as a conclusion. Hollis said of the novel: "A good book, not a lifestyle that I would recommend."
The song begins with a unique synthesizer sound that is reminiscent of an elephant call. At the end of the chorus, a Progrock- like organ sound can be heard, the drums are punchy and the bass is played in slap technique according to the era .
In the video for the song that the band shot with Tim Pope, Mark Hollis plays the dice player in changing clothes, whose facial expression constantly slips away. From time to time an animated cube is shown. According to Hollis, the attempt was made to use the video to mime the 500-page novel in four minutes.
The release took place in March 1984, unlike its predecessor It's My Life , this synth-pop song became a top ten hit in many countries and even made it to number one in Switzerland.
In 1990 the song was released again. This version reached number 78 in the UK.
In France, the song was used in an advertisement for the Peugeot 205 .
