geography

The place is on the east bank of the Hudson River , about 40 km north of central Manhattan in New York City . To the north of Tarrytown lies Sleepy Hollow - the border between the two villages is formed by Andre Creek - to the south of Irvington and to the east are unincorporated areas of Greenburgh.

According to the information from the United States Census Bureau , the village has an area of 14.7  km² , of which 7.7 km² is land and 7.0 km² (= 47.54%) is water.

history

The first known residents in the area were Indians from the tribe of the Weckquaesgeeks, who were related to the Wappinger . They fished and hunted in and around the river, cultivated corn and grain, and traded furs with the Dutch settlers. The first house was built by Dutch settlers in 1645. These were trappers and fishermen, but also farmers who mainly grew wheat. This is said to have given the place its name, Terve Town , which later became Tarrytown. The writer Washington Irving explains the origin of the name differently. In his work The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow he writes that the name was coined by wives whose husbands visited the village inn on market days. In 1681 the businessman Frederick Philippse acquired large estates stretching from the Croton River to the Spuyten Duyvil Creek and from the Hudson River eastward to the Bronx River , a total of 36,000 hectares . He built a house and a flour mill where Sleepy Hollow is now. The mill flourished and was expanded by his son after Philip's death.

Tarrytown's population continued to develop slowly during the 18th century. During the Revolutionary War , John André , a British spy, was captured in Tarrytown on September 23, 1780 . The day before he got caught in a skirmish between loyalists and patriots after he had received plans for the fortifications at West Point from Benedict Arnold , which he was to bring to the British headquarters in New York City . Militia officer John Paulding , who fled British captivity, wore the coat of Hessian soldiers and Andre thought they were allies. The plans were discovered in one of Andre's boots. Andre, who was traveling in civilian clothes, was hanged in Tappan on October 2, 1780 . A memorial dedicated in 1853 commemorates the event.

The newly built New York and Hudson River Railroad from New York City to Albany opened in 1849 and changed the city's economy forever. The shipping traffic decreased. The railway led to a change from agriculture to industrial production of goods. Orchard Street, which existed from 1845 to 1969, became the town's main shopping street. The street and the houses on it were demolished in 1969 as part of an urban renewal program . A carriage maker opened his workshop in 1868, and in 1871 the Silver brothers' shoe factory was established, which eventually employed 150 workers. A steam pump factory started production in 1875 and a textile factory was relocated from New Jersey in 1881.

Towards the end of the 19th century a number of country houses were built in Tarrytown by wealthy New Yorkers, such as Carollcliff , General and travel correspondent Howard Caroll , Hillcrest by William Casey (which two years later belonged to Mark Twain ) and John D. Rockefeller's Kykuit . Lyndhurst , designed by Alexander Jackson Davis , has been declared a National Historic Landmark . Commissioned by William Wallace , Tarrytown Music Hall was built in Queen Anne style in 1885 and is the oldest functioning theater in Westchester County. In addition to several presidents who gave speeches here, well-known musicians such as Tony Bennett , Joan Baez and Dizzy Gillespie appeared in the theater.

From 1899 vehicles were built in Tarrytown, first by Maxwell-Briscoe and from 1915 by Chevrolet , which was incorporated into General Motors in 1918 . During the Second World War , this operation, which is actually located in the area of Sleepy Hollow, was converted to the production of wings for bombers. During that time, Eastern Aircraft employed around 10,000 workers, including 2,900 women.

After three years of construction, the Tappan Zee Bridge was opened to traffic in 1955 .
