The 9th stage of the Tour de France 2010 on July 13th led after the 1st day of rest over 204.5 km from Morzine - Avoriaz to Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne . On this mountain stage there were two sprint classifications as well as the Col de la Madeleine, the first mountain classification of the Hors Catégorie of this tour, two mountain classifications of the 1st, one mountain classification of the 2nd and one of the 4th category. After the tasks of Simon Gerrans , Wladimir Karpez , Roger Kluge and Fabio Felline , 182 of the 198 registered participants started.
Race course
The real start of this long alpine stage was given at 11:36 a.m. Sylvain Chavanel dared the first attack on the first kilometer, which was followed by others, including Jens Voigt and Damiano Cunego . Finally, a group of eleven formed, in which, in addition to Voigt, Christophe Moreau , Jérôme Pineau and Thor Hushovd were represented. A three-man chase group formed behind them. Pineau secured the first smaller mountain classification and Hushovd the first sprint. Markus Eibegger meanwhile gave up the race.
In the ascent to the Col de la Colombière, David Millar had to let go. When even more drivers had to demolish a little later, the Gruppetto was already formed . The lead of the leading group over the field was now more than three minutes. In the field attacked Alexander Vinokurow , around whom a second group of pursuers formed, in which Chavanel and Damiano Cunego were in turn. The BMC Racing Team was able to close the gap again. In the leading group, Hushovd fell and lost contact with the group and dropped back into the field. Even John Fröhlinger had to demolish the meantime, which were in the top flight only nine drivers. Cungego attacked again accompanied by Kevin Seeldraeyers and Sérgio Paulinho and went on the way to reach the first chasing group, which consisted only of Jaroslaw Popowytsch and Robert Hunter . Rein Taaramäe caught up with this. Moreau attacked the mountain classification and won it before Pineau. Cunego and Taaramäe set out to chase the leading group and finally reached them, and Fröhlinger also caught up again, as a result of which the leading group grew to twelve drivers.
On the third mountain of the day, Pineau won again and the group's lead grew to over five minutes. Pineau also won the fourth mountain classification and on the flat stretch after the mountain, the group's lead increased to over six minutes before the now quieter main peloton after a temporary decline. José Iván Gutiérrez was the first to cross the last sprint classification of the day, but there was no sprinting.
In the ascent to Col de la Madeleine, some riders in the leading group lost touch. In the group of favorites, too, the Saxo Bank team was working harder again, so that many drivers lost touch. Alexander Vinokurov attacked again and was able to pull away. In the top group, Voigt was now left behind, so that only five drivers were represented. In the group of favorites, the previous wearer of the yellow jersey Cadel Evans could no longer follow due to a broken elbow and fell behind. In the leading group, Moreau had to let go. Andy Schleck attacked several times and only Alberto Contador could follow him. The duo then took turns in leadership and expanded their lead over the other favorites. Voigt, who had fallen back from the top group, was caught up by both drivers shortly afterwards and then made speed for Schleck until shortly before the summit. In the top group, Anthony Charteau attacked the mountain classification and won it. As a result, he took over the dotted jersey from Pineau, as both drivers now had the same number of points, but Charteau was placed further up in the overall standings. Schleck in sixth and Contador in seventh drove over the summit just over two minutes behind the leading group. Samuel Sánchez followed half a minute later.
On the descent, Schleck and Contador drove towards Moreau, who was still ahead of them. Damien Monier fell on the descent, but was able to continue. The trio around Schleck narrowed the gap to the leading group more and more during the descent and caught up with them shortly before the finish. Sandy Casar finally won the sprint . Evans, who was almost ten minutes behind the leading group on the Col de la Madeleine, was able to reduce his deficit to around eight minutes. Because of this big deficit he lost the yellow jersey and fell back to 18th place in the overall standings. David Millar, who had to cover almost the entire distance as a soloist, was able to cross the finish line just under 43 minutes behind, just within the waiting period .
