The 16th stage of the Tour de France 2019 took place on July 23, 2019. The 177-kilometer flat stage began and ended in Nîmes . The Dutchman Wilco Kelderman ( Team Sunweb ) no longer competed for the tour due to back problems. The stage start was at 1:20 p.m. at the amphitheater in Nîmes , the sharp start was at 1:35 p.m. north of the École nationale de police of Nîmes near the Nîmes-Courbessac airfield.

Race course

The sharp start was delayed because the Norwegian Alexander Kristoff had technical problems with his bike in the neutralized zone. At the beginning of the stage, Alexis Gougeard , Stéphane Rossetto , Łukasz Wiśniowski , Paul Ourselin and Lars Bak managed to break away from the rest of the field, but only had a maximum lead of about two minutes.

In Uzès , almost 27 kilometers from the finish, the Dane Jakob Fuglsang ( Team Astana ) had a hard crash and had to give up the tour. He suffered severe bruises in his left hand, arms and knees.

At 2.5 kilometers from the finish, the leading group was caught. In the mass sprint, Caleb Ewan won just ahead of Elia Viviani , Dylan Groenewegen and Peter Sagan . For Ewan it was the second Tour stage win in 2019 after he had already won the 11th stage in Toulouse . Sagan consolidated his lead in the sprint standings with 4th place . Alexis Gougeard was named the most competitive rider of the stage.
