Trivium is an American metal band from Orlando , Florida that was formed in 1999. The band has released nine studio albums to date. The term " Trivium " ( Latin for three ways ) describes the connection between the three linguistic subjects of the liberal arts: grammar , rhetoric and logic .

Band history

Matt Heafy and Paolo Gregoletto , Trivium live in Linz

The early years and Ember to Inferno (2000-2003)

The band was formed in 1999 by singer Brad Lewter, Brent Young and Travis Smith . In a talent competition at Lake Brantley High School in Altamonte Springs ( Florida ), the band discovered their current singer Matthew Heafy , who sang Metallica's song "No Leaf Clover" at this competition . After a prelude in which he played "For Whom the Bell Tolls", also by Metallica, Heafy was accepted into the band.

The first concert in the line-up, which existed until 2010, took place in the auditorium of Lake Brantley High School. As the only metal band on the entire show, they were only allowed about 20 minutes of playing time, in which they only played cover versions . After a few concerts at parties, Lewter left the band. Matthew Heafy took on the singing role rather unintentionally. When drummer Travis Smith visited Heafy one day in his apartment, he named the then 15-year-old guitarist as a singer. During the next two years the band refined their sound and skills. Although the band has not yet had a release, Matthew Heafy was named best guitarist at the Orlando Metal Awards. In early 2003, Trivium recorded their first demo . A short time later, the band signed a contract for an album with the German music label Lifeforce Records , on which the debut album Ember to Inferno was released in the same year .

In 2003 the band was looking for a second guitarist alongside Heafy and soon found what they were looking for in Corey Beaulieu . After bassist Brent Young left the band a year later, the search for a successor turned out to be very complicated. The band made several attempts to find a talented bass player, but had little success. Eventually a replacement was found in Paolo Gregoletto and Trivium were able to go on tour as the opening act for Machine Head .

Ascendancy (2004-2005)

The band spent 2004 writing new songs for their next album. In September the band went to the Morrisound studio in Tampa , Florida to record the songs. At this time the record company Roadrunner Records became aware of Trivium. Roadrunner- A&R Monte Connor heard the song "If I Could Collapse the Masses" from the debut album on the supplement CD of a fanzine . Connor contacted Heafy's father, who was the band's manager at the time . A short time later, the band sent a demo recording with three songs and a self-financed video clip for "Like Light to the Flies". Connor was enthusiastic about the sound and talent of the musicians and finally signed the band.

Despite intensive studio visits and recordings, Trivium had time to support bands such as Machine Head, Iced Earth , Killswitch Engage and Fear Factory . In March 2005, the new album with the title Ascendancy was finally released. At this point Trivium was on the "Roadrage 2005" tour through North America and was accompanied by The Agony Scene , Still Remains and 3 Inches of Blood . On days off, Trivium played individual support shows as the opening act for Danzig and Chimaira . The first concerts in Europe followed as part of the "Roadrage 2005", this time with Still Remains and 3 Inches of Blood.

In July and August Trivium played on the Ozzfest tour in North America. When the dispute between Sharon Osbourne and the band Iron Maiden escalated, the band took the side of the "iron maidens". The members appeared in Iron Maiden shirts and played a few covers, which got them some problems with the crew, which was mostly made up of supporters of the Osbourne family.

The Ozzfest tour was followed by a headlining tour through Great Britain (together with All That Remains ) and a Japan tour with Arch Enemy . Then Trivium went on another headlining tour of the United States and Canada , where they were supported by Children of Bodom and Amon Amarth . At the beginning of 2006 Trivium accompanied the Swedish band In Flames on their North American tour together with DevilDriver and Zao .

For the 25th anniversary of their record company Roadrunner Records, the album Roadrunner United: The All-Star Sessions was released. Matthew Heafy was chosen to be one of the four captains who wrote the music and lyrics for the songs. Corey Beaulieu can also be heard on this album.

The Crusade and Shogun (2006-2009)

In April 2006, Trivium went into the studio to record their third album, The Crusade . In addition to the album, the band recorded a cover version of “Master of Puppets” for a Metallica tribute sampler for the British magazine Kerrang .

The Crusade songs are very different from the old style. The riffs and the songwriting are reminiscent of Thrash Metal of the late 1980s, especially bands like Metallica or Testament . The singing, which was once a mixture of growling and emotion, is now limited to scratchy singing. Heafy's singing is often compared to that of James Hetfield . Because of his old style of singing, Heafy often struggled with hoarseness . In addition, the band wanted to stand out from the metalcore bands, whose singers have a similar style of singing.

Matt Heafy and Corey Beaulieu live 2012

The release was originally supposed to take place on October 20th, but has been brought forward to October 6th. The album received rave reviews from music journalists. For example, the German magazine Rock Hard voted The Crusade “Album of the Month”. Furthermore, the German magazine Metal Hammer named The Crusade the best Thrash Metal album of 2006. The album reached number seven in the British album charts and number 25 in the United States.

A headlining tour of North America followed. In the summer Trivium played several festivals in Europe, including Rock am Ring , Nova Rock and the Download Festival . Trivium was awarded the "Golden God Award" by the British Metal Hammer as the best live band.

In December 2006, they appeared as the opening act on Iron Maiden's European tour. Maiden singer Bruce Dickinson suggested Trivium as a possible support band and later invited the band personally. The band then played several shows in Australia and New Zealand before playing several concerts in Europe as part of a headlining tour in April and May 2007. They were accompanied by Annihilator and Sanctity .

In November 2007 Trivium and Machine Head played a joint tour in Europe. On the “The Black Crusade” tour, the two co-headliners were accompanied by Arch Enemy , DragonForce and Shadows Fall . From October 2007 Trivium worked with producer Nick Raskulinecz for about a year on the fourth studio album, which was released on September 26, 2008 in Germany under the name Shogun . In the fall of 2008 Trivium appeared on the side of Mastodon , Slayer and Amon Amarth on the "Unholy Alliance Chapter III" tour.

In Waves and Vengeance Falls (2010-2015)

In February 2010 Nick Augusto joined Trivium as the new drummer. At first Augusto was a temporary solution for the "Into-the-Mouth-of-Hell-We-Tour" tour, during which Travis Smith took a break for personal reasons. In February 2010, the band announced that they had fired Smith. Exact reasons for this are not known, but there should have been some discrepancies within the band.

On August 5th, 2011, Trivium released their fifth studio album In Waves via Roadrunner Records. The album reached number eight in the album charts in Germany. In 2012 Trivium played countless shows and festivals, including a. at Rock am Ring. In autumn they started the “Get Infected Tour” through Europe with As I Lay Dying and Caliban and all shows in Germany, UK and France were completely sold out.

In early 2013, Trivium began recording their sixth studio album. David Draiman , the singer of Disturbed , was announced as producer . In order to mention the album title Vengeance Falls , fans were invited on July 23, 2013 via the official Facebook page to visit a website that enabled them to hear spoken text and parts of the single Brave This Storm and to see the new album cover. The new song celebrated its live premiere on July 28th at the Rock the City Festival in Bucharest and has been available as a stream and for free download since July 31st. On the Wacken Open Air played Trivium a second new song called Strife . In addition to the release of the new album, a USA tour with DevilDriver , After the Burial and Sylosis has been announced for the fall . Vengeance Falls was released in Germany on October 11th.

On May 8, 2014 it was announced that Trivium had split up with drummer Nick Augusto. He was replaced by Mat Madiro, who was previously responsible for the drum technology. On December 8, 2015, Trivium announced that it had split up with drummer Mat Madiro. His successor is Paul Wandtke.

Silence in the Snow (2015-2017)

In the fall of 2014, guitarist Corey Beaulieu announced that the band would be working on the follow-up album to Vengeance Falls in 2015 and that he hoped the album would be released in the fall of that year. On July 17th, 2015, the band launched a website snow.trivium.org , which announced the new album. They also changed their Facebook profile to the same picture as the website, hinting at the release of the new album. On July 24th, the band posted a six-day countdown on their website. An unofficial picture appeared online on July 29, announcing the new album title, Silence in the Snow . This image contained a release date of October 2, 2015, which was announced along with the release of the music video for the theme song Silence in the Snow . In Germany the album reached number 13 in the album charts. Silence in the Snow , Blind Leading the Blind , Until the World Goes Cold and Dead and Gone were released as singles . During the tour cycle for the album, which took the band to Europe and North America between August 2015 and March 2017, there was another change on the drums. Paul Wandtke came in December 2015, but had to leave the band at the end of 2016. On January 22, 2017, Alex Bent was introduced as a replacement. He made his first joint appearance with Trivium in Dublin on February 11, 2017 .

The Sin and the Sentence and What the Dead Men Say (since 2017)

In April 2017, only about two weeks after the end of the last tour dates in Europe, Corey Beaulieu announced that there would be a new album, but did not announce a schedule for the recording, as the band was still in discussion about the further schedule. On July 26th 2017 the band started on their website with the message “VIII. I. "the advance notice for a new album, which the date" 1. August ”in Roman numerals . On August 1, 2017, the band released the new single The Sin and the Sentence , accompanied by a music video. The title The Sin and the Sentence was presented live on the tour in Europe that followed in August . On August 24, the band released the second single, The Heart from Your Hate, and announced the track listing and release date of The Sin and the Sentence , which was released on October 20, 2017. In Germany the album reached number 12 in the official charts. The songs Betrayer , The Heart from Your Hate and Thrown into the Fire premiered on the North American tour that followed at the end of October . On March 10, 2018, the two songs Sever the Hand and Beyond Oblivion made their live debut in Haarlem , the Netherlands, at the start of the European tour .

On March 22, 2019, the band released the song Pillars of Serpents , a new recording of the song of the same name from their debut album Ember to Inferno from 2003. The newly recorded version of the song is already included on the album The Sin and the Sentence , but only in the Japanese version of the album.

On February 25, 2020, Trivium published a teaser clip on Twitter with the title "Catastrophist". Two days later the single of the same name was released and the new album What the Dead Men Say was announced, which was released on April 24, 2020.
