The Metro Station Meiderich Station is a subway station of the light rail Rhein-Ruhr in Duisburg district Meiderich . It was built in 2000 together with the tram tunnel under the Ruhr and the Duisburg harbor . It is named after the neighboring Duisburg-Meiderich Süd train station .
history
Shortly after the completion of the inner city tunnel of the Duisburg Stadtbahn, the further construction of the Stadtbahn route as "Section 7 / 8A" to the north began in December 1992. As part of this expansion in the quarter Meiderich the two rail stops "on the dam" were and "Meiderich Bahnhof" in an open design built.
The station was opened on September 23, 2000 after the completion of the tunnel under the Duisburg harbor.
Location and facilities
The underground station is located in the Meiderich district of Duisburg in the immediate vicinity of the eponymous Duisburg-Meiderich Süd station . Until 2000, the stop was therefore still called Meiderich Süd Bf , but was then due to the fact that it was the central connection point in Duisburg-Meiderich and at the same time the center of Meiderich had only one train station, as the old Duisburg-Meiderich Nord train station had been around for a long time was shut down, renamed Meiderich Bahnhof with the opening of the Ruhr tunnel . At the same time, the railway did not rename its station, so today there is the curious situation that a DVG bus and underground station Meiderich Bahnhof together with a DB station Duisburg- Meiderich Süd forms a junction.
The underground station forms the northern end of the U79 line and the northern end of the Duisburg Ruhr tunnel. Therefore there is a sweeping and parking facility north of the underground station, which should also serve as a continuation of the tunnel to the north, as well as the ramp, originally intended as a temporary measure, through which the tram line 903 sees the daylight again. The station was designed with a central platform, which is divided into a low-floor platform with a platform height of 36 cm and a high-floor section with a platform height of 90 cm. The exits are located at both ends of the station. One side is Von-der-Mark-Straße and the other is covered access to the bus station of the same name. The station is equipped with escalators on both sides and has an elevator.
The Meiderich replacement signal box of the Duisburg Stadtbahn is located in the underground station , which is the fall-back level for the Duisburg Hbf relay signal box .

Planning
The original urban railway plans of the VRR and the state of North Rhine-Westphalia envisaged extending the tunnel from Meiderich Bahnhof to Landschaftspark Nord with a new underground station at Bronkhorststrasse . This tram tunnel would run under Neumühler Strasse . Since on the one hand the Duisburg-Nord Landscape Park was once a steelworks, on the other hand there is a chemical plant next to Neumühler Straße halfway between the Meiderich Bahnhof and Landschaftspark Nord stops , the soil between the Meiderich Bahnhof underground station and the Landschaftspark Nord stop is contaminated accordingly . There is also an underground tar lake under Neumühler Straße , which must not be pierced. Due to these many complications, an extension of the tram tunnel from Meiderich Bahnhof to Landschaftspark Nord would cost around € 90 million and that for a distance of around 700 m as the crow flies. Due to the rejection of the Düsseldorf district government, this cost-intensive project will no longer be pursued. Instead, the above-ground route is to be optimized, which would cost around € 10 to 12 million. To optimize it, the distance between the tracks between the Meiderich Bahnhof and Landschaftspark Nord stops is to be widened so that the wider DVG B-cars can travel over this route. Furthermore, the Voßstraße and Emilstraße stops are to be replaced by the new Bückelstraße stop . The previously planned stop at Bronkhorststrasse is now to be built above ground.
