UEFA Youth League 2018/19

The 2019/20 UEFA Youth League was the seventh season of the most important European competition for U19 club teams in football. Based on the UEFA Champions League have played in this competition one hand, A-youth crews of the clubs in the same season for the League group stage of the Champions were qualified, on the other hand, the 32 A-Junior Champion joined the strongest nations in the UEFA against each other .

The competition began with the first games of the group stage on September 17, 2019 and ended with the final at the Center sportif de Colovray in Nyon, which was postponed to August 25, 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic .

The defending champions were the juniors of FC Porto , the winners for the first time were the Real Madrid youth team .

mode

Since the 2015/16 Youth League season, the competition has been held in a two-pronged system. On the one hand, there is the UEFA Champions League route, in which the 32 youth A teams from the clubs that qualified for the group stage of the UEFA Champions League in the same year compete in eight groups of four teams compete. The group leader in each group qualified directly for the round of 16. The composition of the groups was based on the draw for the group stage of the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League .

If two or more teams were tied at the end of all group matches, the decision was made (in this order)

  1. Number of points in direct comparison
  2. Goal difference in direct comparison
  3. Number of goals in direct comparison
  4. Number of away goals in direct comparison
  5. If, after applying criteria 1-4, two teams still occupy the same place in the table, criteria 1-4 are reapplied for these two teams. If this does not result in a definitive placement, criteria 6–9 will be applied.
  6. Goal difference from all group matches
  7. Higher number of goals scored
  8. Lower number of points from yellow and red cards (red card = 3 points, yellow card = 1 point, yellow-red card = 3 points)
  9. Drawing of lots

The runners-up competed in a playoff round against eight teams from the national championship route. The 32 youth champions of the strongest nations qualified for the championship route according to the UEFA club coefficient . If associations were present without a national youth championship or if the national champions were already represented in the format after the UEFA Champions League, the next nation moved up in the UEFA ranking. These champions played in two qualifying rounds, each with a home and away leg against a different champion (similar to the mode of the qualifying rounds for the UEFA Champions League).

The 16 winners of the first round played in a second qualifying round with a round trip from the eight teams that competed in the play-offs against the runners-up in the Champions League path, with the play-offs being decided in just one game. The eight winners of the play-offs qualified for the second round, in which the group winners of the Champions League path intervened again. In the knockout phase up to the final, all winners were determined in one game each.

As in the previous format, the semi-finals and the final were played in a mini-tournament at a neutral location.
