Vanessa

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Vanessa is a female given name .

Origin and meaning

The name Vanessa goes back to the writer Jonathan Swift . Swift used him as a pseudonym for his longtime secret lover, Esther Vanhomrigh . He formed the name from the first syllable of Vanhomrigh's family name and the nickname Essa (according to other sources, Esse ) of her first name. The Greek deity Phanessa is sometimes cited as another possibility for the origin of the name . The existence of a goddess with this name in Greek mythology is not clearly proven; possibly that deity was only of local importance, but a female form of Phanes also appears possible .

The name was first published in 1726 in Swift's autobiographical poem Cadenus and Vanessa . Swift wrote this as early as 1713, but kept it under lock and key until three years after the death of his lover.

In German-speaking countries, the name spread from the late 1960s, mainly due to the popularity of the British actress Vanessa Redgrave .
