Seduction artist

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The term Seduction Community or Pickup Community refers to predominantly male groups who, through the targeted application of different behaviors and psychological methods, hope to have better chances in the sexual seduction of strangers (mostly women). The men of this subculture are often referred to as seduction artists.

history

The emergence of the seduction community dates back to when author Ross Jeffries published the book How to Get the Women You Desire into Bed and a collection of NLP techniques under the title Speed Seduction . In 1994, De Lewis Payne, a student of Jeffries, founded the newsgroup alt.seduction.fast (ASF), which in the mid-1990s created a network of Internet forums, mail lists, blogs and websites where seduction techniques could be exchanged.

With the success of The Game (in German The perfect mesh ), which stood in the "New York Times Bestseller List" by the article in the New York Times by Neil Strauss and the reality TV show The Pickup Artist was the seduction community is known to a wider public through the media. Today z. B. Neil Strauss alias Style and Erik von Markovik alias Mystery as internationally known representatives of this scene. However, Strauss recently turned away from the Seduction Community and said that he was ashamed of his book The Game .

Goals and Methods

A selection of literature on the subject of "seduction"

In the pickup , the sexual behavior of people is interpreted according to popular science , e.g. B. as a product of sexual selection . According to this explanatory model , a woman - i. d. Usually unconsciously - in search of “good genes” in a man and good future care for their offspring to be conceived , which is why a man has to prove his qualities so that women find him attractive. It is z. B. discusses how women test men to get certainty about their qualities. A man must therefore on the one hand understand these so-called "shit tests" and react adequately to them in order to be able to pass them, and on the other hand develop his personality and appearance in general positively in order to increase his attractiveness for women in general.

The application of z. Sometimes very heterogeneous approaches and methods (e.g. emphatically honest versus manipulative approach) are intended to arouse greater sexual interest in other people. In addition, communication types and skills as well as social skills and the development of personality are dealt with in order to be able to achieve the respective goals such as one-night-stands , partnership , marriage or increasing social contacts.

The scene often makes use of excerpts from scientific theories such as evolutionary ethics , behavioral biology , sexual selection , evolutionary psychology , evolutionary aesthetics , sociology , sociobiology , neuropsychology and general methods such as B. NLP , persuasive communication , mind control , suggestion or hypnosis to explain the effectiveness of the methods and techniques of the pickup .

psychology

In some views people are categorized from a pragmatic point of view according to character traits in order to make the archetypal behavior visible. The classification is intended to explain how and why people behave in certain situations. Each archetype should thus become understandable and predictable. The aspect of group dynamics deals with e.g. B. how and why women behave in company or in a group and what social constraints influence their behavior. These ideas form a basis for the inner game and outer game of this art of seduction, which provides a spectrum of action for the different types in order to act successfully in different situations.

Inner game

As the basis of sexual attractiveness, the so-called inner game relates to psychological processes (e.g. cognition ) and in particular to aspects of self-perception . It is about the development of the personality , to eliminate deficits in the pairing ritual and to develop self-confidence . Basically, your own personality should be self-determined and dominant and life should be designed or represented in an active, varied and interesting way. The characteristics that characterize an alpha male within the community serve as impulses for socialization so that a man can rise in the hierarchy in a group or community and generally be successful in everyday life.

Outer game

The outer game describes active processes within the community that can be used when seducing. There are different methods for different situations and types, including behavioral and communication techniques and phrases . At every stage of seduction, from the first address to the so-called final close , certain aids are offered if necessary. For example, in addition to interpreting and using gestures or facial expressions , skills such as flirting , party games , palm reading or dancing are also required . It will u. a. teaches how to address someone in different contexts and how to keep the resulting conversations flowing. It is important u. a. the question of how the willingness and interest in sexual contacts can be aroused and how ambiguous reactions and body language can be interpreted in a purposeful manner or how a man can react appropriately to tests by the female counterpart (e.g. bitchiness ) and recognize whether a woman is really interested has on him. Part of this community deals, among other things, with the areas of rhetoric , NLP or hypnosis, in order to use them for manipulative or meta-communicative purposes if necessary . Consciously optimizing your own appearance, such as B. clothing, body language or voice are considered part of the outer game .

The processes of the Seduction Community shown in the outer game are very diverse, partly easy to learn, but ultimately only successful with the help of an appropriate appearance and at the same time with mastering the inner game . For people with severe disabilities , however, this can be a lengthy process.

scene

The members are on the Internet in z. Sometimes restricted or secret forums , blogs , newsgroups , e-magazines are interconnected and organized in groups, so-called lairs , in many countries. Members of the scene often perceive their entry into the community as a turning point. The pseudonyms used by members (such as Mystery, Style, Juggler, Badboy or Tyler Durden ) also symbolize the desire to lead life in a new, unconventional way. Some members publish, in some cases, detailed testimonials on the Internet, including verbatim reproduction of dialogues and descriptions of sexual contacts. Experiences, attitudes and views are discussed and the details are adapted for other situations. A small part of the community is concerned with the possibilities of a woman to win a man and to keep him (in the long term). The men of this subculture, who are considered successful, are often referred to as seduction artists (Pickup Artist, PUA for short, sometimes Pickup Master, PUM or Pickup Guru for short, PUG for short), women are called Pickup Cats.

Commercial offers

The views and practices are marketed by some companies in seminars, workshops, at congresses as well as in books and on DVD. An internationally known company, for example, is Love Systems, which offers , among other things, commercial courses with theoretical lessons and accompanied approach (so-called coffin ) in the field . For women, there are now also commercial Flirt - Coaching offerings.

media

In 2007, the reality TV show The Pickup-Artist started on MTV (originally a production of VH1 ) with Erik von Markovik aka Mystery , who is supposed to turn eight men into pickup artists. A second season was commissioned and broadcast by VH1. Also in films such as B. The Tao of Steve , The Date Profi and Hitch the topic was taken up and dealt with. The right to film the book The Game by Neil Strauss was acquired by Spyglass Entertainment . Dating coach Ross Jeffries is the role model for the role of the flirt guru Frank TJ Mackey , who plays Tom Cruise in the movie Magnolia .

Scientific studies

The numerous studies and publications on mating behavior of people also examine views, methods and tactics as they published the seduction community, and in some academic theses z. B. from the University of Texas at Austin , the University of Chicago or the University of Klagenfurt , the seduction community is thematically treated. In scientific studies z. B. Requirements for sexual contacts of different ethnicities or different aspects of z. B. polygamous , polyandric or polygynic behavior in humans as well as possible underlying motivations are treated, documented and interpreted.

In studies found z. B. Professor Michael Cunningham has a preference in women for unattached, sociable, dominant and sexually mature men with high social status, potential and financial viability, whose demeanor appeals to their feelings and that the perception of beautiful women is essentially the same across cultures. Further studies showed the attractiveness of altruism and tolerance in combination with self-determined dominance on women, in more serious relationships a preference of women for sociability and a preference of physically attractive and more aggressive men for casual sex without obligation . According to a study by Prof. Jeffrey A. Hall from the University of Kansas, men with aggressive seduction techniques, in which they assign women the subordinate role, are successful with women with a preference for casual sex and a negative attitude towards other women. The sexual preferences of women are subject to e.g. B. the menstrual cycle . After a further investigation into the "Nice Guy Paradox" women find men with z. B. lack of self-esteem or a subservience in unattractive relationships.

After investigations z. B. by Prof. Monica Moore of Webster University women use over 50 non-verbal tactics to e.g. For example, to encourage men of their choice to contact them in public bars and Prof. Guéguen et al. Have shown in field studies that a smiling woman who makes brief eye contact with men or who makes her breasts look bigger with a wonderbra is often approached by men. According to studies by Professor David Buss and others, women also use a number of verbal techniques to increase the perception of men, for B. to change associatively or ambivalent .

According to studies z. B. Flirting is a general behavior in platonic friendships and in love relationships that can have a positive effect on the presentation and perception of one's own attractiveness and self-confidence. Incorrectly interpreted ambiguities can also lead to misunderstandings. In addition, both genders have different strategies to ward off flirting, which men often fail to recognize.

According to Professor Karl Grammer , men use a number of non-verbal signals that are attractive to women. According to investigations by the working group of evolutionary biologist Dr. B. Fink from the Courant Research Center of the University of Göttingen , work z. B. Certain dance moves made by men attractive to women. According to other studies, demonstrating humor increases women's interest in a man, and according to Prof. Mary Ballard of Appalachian State University , behaviors such as play B. "Teasing" plays an important role to increase intimacy or to initiate sex. Studies show the different assessments of the opening of conversations (so-called openers ) by different ethnic groups, according to which direct and innocuous openings or compliments are more successful than aggressive, compulsively humorous or clichéd openings. Professor Susan Sprecher from Illinois State University found out that the quality of communication skills plays a role especially for women, whether they want to meet a man repeatedly and Prof. James Pennebaker among others showed that communicative adaptation increases attractiveness. According to Professor Rita Ciceri from the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore , what matters is a flexible communicative process with a variety of behavioral patterns which, with its irregularities and allusions, leaves statements somewhat unclear and incomplete. As a result, a lot is left to the imagination of the interlocutor and promises her more than she has already seen. According to Professor Keith Cambell et al., Such communicative ambiguity creates an attractive excitement that is difficult to control.

According to Prof. Nicolas Guéguen, women can increase the interest of men and men the willingness of women for further contacts through brief, light touch . Romantic background music also increases the chances for men of further contacts.

criticism

Controversial videos by the pick-up artist Julien Blanc caused outrage around the world in autumn 2014. The women's rights organization Terre des Femmes in Germany then said that there were calls for sexual violence against women at events organized by the so-called pick-up artists. This is not covered by freedom of expression. Worldwide protests were formed in the fall of 2014 via Twitter and an online petition. Hoteliers were asked to cancel the rooms for the seminars of the pick-up company Real Social Dynamics from the USA. The Australian Ministry of the Interior put pick-up coach Juliеn Blanc on the list of undesirable people and withdrew his visa. Representatives of the largest German pick-up forum condemned "misogynistic statements and aggressive videos". Humiliation and violence contradict the principles of Pick-Up. The assumption, which is often widespread in the media, that pick-up artists manipulate women into bed against their will is what they consider to be unrealistic, naive and sexist. Women are thus denied an independent personality and sexuality. Pick-up means to behave attractively and thus to appear attractive to women. Every sexual act takes place by mutual consent. Likewise, pick-up is not limited to "mass opening". From the first flirt to a long-term relationship, every aspect of the relationship between women and men receives the same attention in the pick-up community.

The family therapist Dan Kiley sees in his book " Peter Pan Syndrome " the values as pathological, which the seduction community also represents. Catherine Townsend, a “sex and dating” columnist who has read such seduction guides and websites, criticizes the mere use of tips and tricks from books, seminars or workshops without an appropriate “authentic” appearance as ineffective. The news magazine Der Spiegel published an interview with the psychologist Andreas Baranowski, who critically assesses the effectiveness of the techniques of self-proclaimed seduction experts. The flirting strategies of the Seduction Community are then outdated and do not take into account the latest scientific findings, such as B. the pure placebo effect of NLP. For example, after a three-day seduction seminar by the Mystery Method Corp., the journalist and writer Gene Weingarten describes or Fariez Setiawan, after a seminar in Jakarta, found their experience to be of little help.

In another perspective, an article in the weekly "Houston Press" states that the methods of the seduction community are no more misleading than To make yourself more attractive for men, for example, through makeup , wearing a wonderbra or high heels or through “body work-out” in the fitness center. According to an article in the news magazine “Der Spiegel”, women often respond positively to the fact that a coach teaches men to flirt . For his article, the journalist Hugo Rifkind attended a seminar with Neil Strauss and describes his experience as a positive experience that increases self-esteem, because you know how to attract women's attention. According to Neil Strauss, the methods should help men to come into contact with women. A woman can then decide whether and who to choose.
