Order against seriousness in the German Carnival Museum

The Order Against Animal Seriousness is an order and culture prize awarded annually towards the end of the carnival season by the Aachen Carnival Association (AKV) to public figures, which regularly receives nationwide, often international media attention. The order was co-initiated by Jacques Königstein in 1952.

Goal setting

The Order Against Animal Seriousness is awarded to well-known national and international personalities in public life, "who combine individuality, popularity and motherhood, but above all have shown humor and humanity in office." Lawyers. Those honored become knights of the order against the seriousness of the animal for life .

history

In early February 1950, the British military prosecutor James Arthur Dugdale, public prosecutor in the city of Aachen, which was part of the British occupation, ordered the early release of a delinquent who had beaten up a Belgian occupation soldier. Instead of February 20, 1950, he was released on February 18. Dugdale's reasoning was that the person who had returned from a Soviet prisoner-of-war should not spend the highest public holidays in the Rhineland behind bars . Helmut A. Crous , editor-in-chief and AKV archivist, informed the Elferrat about this important event. The Elferrat decided to award this year's medal to James Arthur Dugdale in recognition of the (…) demonstrated understanding of the Aachen Carnival (…) . The humanity of Dugdale was honored by the AKV in the year in which the Charlemagne Prize was awarded for the first time .

In 1952 it was an event in Mölln that made the AKV sit up and take notice. The finance ministers of all federal states met. However, someone had their festive table cleared on the grounds that Schleswig-Holstein was a poor country and served pea soup . Königstein found out who was concerned and Jules von Jouanne, Kiel government councilor, received the AKV medal in 1952. The idea of the order was founded, and from now on a special person was sought “who, with humanity and humor, would fight against the soulless bureaucracy and recorded the neighing of the official white man. ”In 1954 the first order against the animal seriousness was awarded as an annual order, a newspaper headline against animal seriousness had given Koenigstein the idea of the name.

In the following year the order and chivalry took on their distinctive shape. The graphic artist Manö Paulsen designed the medal and jeweler Heinrich Jaspers took over the production. “The blue enamel sign shows a shako in a golden, paragraph- reinforced bird cage, on the top of which a bird whistles its song in freedom. Originally a military, of parts of the German police until the early 1970s worn headgear symbolizes the Shako the deadly seriousness that instead of winning with a dunce cap bird in paragraph cage is trapped. "When a stranger session designated religious ceremony was in the log book in 1955 for the first time written by the knight of the order . The award turned into a foolish accolade . "The idea of honoring examples of humorous, human conduct of office and praising them in a subtle, mischievous manner with a cabaret-cut pen developed into the figurehead of the witty carnival favored by Königstein ." The award ritual includes the obligatory laudation of the last knight. The designated knight receives as knight insignia: the Order Against Animal Seriousness, the knight's cap and the order 's role in the best kitchen Latin .

In 1955 the Order was temporarily divided into classes. The normal class of the order for unspectacular but original events and the special class of the order . The normal class was awarded three times. The AKV started to honor well-known international personalities. Thereupon, knight Carlo Schmid had warned in his speech in 1958: that we should not fall into animal humor out of sheer fear of the animal seriousness. Konrad Adenauer was knighted in 1959 for the 100th anniversary . The reputation and popularity of the AKV increased.

For the first time, pictures of the award ceremony in 1957 were broadcast on the ARD Tagesschau and in 1960 a 45-minute live broadcast of the award ceremony was broadcast. Consequently, the knight's block became a foolish act of state . The television broadcasts brought the AKV a financial upswing with the television fee as well as the pressure to succeed to present a knight who inspires the audience and a meeting president capable of entertaining. The program was broadcast live on German television until 1982 with one exception (1971). From 1983 the broadcasting slot was shifted to the third program with full broadcasting, in 1991 the AKV signed a five-year contract with the broadcaster RTL with a three-hour live broadcast, the club prematurely switched to WDR and the recorded broadcasting on ARD took place since 1995 Carnival show with Elferrat not permanently present on the stage. The order became known nationwide through the television broadcasts of the medal-awarding meetings. The award of the unusual order also attracted international attention to internationally known personalities.

With Gertrud Höhler , a knight was beaten for the first time in 1988. In 2020, Armin Laschet was the first Aachen citizen to receive the knighthood.

After the closure of the New Kurhaus in 1975 and its use by the Aachen casino since July 2, 1976, it was awarded in the coronation hall of the Aachen town hall and, since 1979, in the Europa hall of the Eurogress .

criticism

On February 3, 2007, Joachim Hunold , head of the Air Berlin airline , received the award in recognition of “that even today there are men who have the courage to be a guy”. The award was not without conflicts, as the allegation of surreptitious advertising was in the room. Hunold and others had named the company several times and promoted its services. Since the speeches of other politicians, especially Rainer Brüderles , were perceived as boring, WDR considered broadcasting the meeting only on WDR television in future . The main sponsor Zentis then temporarily withdrew its support for 2007.

Finally, the WDR agreed with the AKV that a shortened recording would be shown in the first program and a longer, albeit shortened version would be shown when it was repeated in the third program.
