Wierzba [ ˈvjɛʐba ] ( German Wiersba , 1938–1945 Beldahnsee ) is a village belonging to the municipality of Ruciane-Nida in southeastern Masuria in the Polish Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship , Powiat Piski .
Geographical location
The village is located 21 kilometers northwest of the district town of Pisz (German Johannisburg ) on the eastern bank of the Bełdany (German Beldahnsee ).
history
The village of Wiersba was probably only founded in the 18th century. The name of the place is derived from the Polish wierzba for willow tree .
Until 1905 Wiersba belonged to the administrative district of Gumbinnen , then to the administrative district of Allenstein .
In 1938, as part of the Germanization of Masurian place names, what was then Wiersba in Beldahnsee was renamed after the adjacent water.
On January 27, 1945 the Red Army reached Beldahnsee, whose civilian population had been almost completely evacuated shortly before. After the end of the Second World War in 1945, the Beldahnsee , which was part of the German Empire ( East Prussia ) , fell to Poland. The resident German population, unless they had fled, was largely expelled after 1945 and replaced by new citizens from other parts of Poland. The place was renamed or renamed Wierzba.
From 1975 to 1998 Wierzba belonged to what was then the Suwałki Voivodeship , then joined the newly formed Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship in 1999 .
