history
The castle Arbesbach , called "Stockzahn the Waldviertel ", is over 900 meters on a granite formation . It was built at the end of the 12th century in the middle of the Arbesbach Forest on the then long-distance road from Spitz to Freistadt and was built around 1190 by the Kuenringers on the Weitra- Rappottenstein line . In 1593 the Arbesbach manor was built as a mansion to replace the castle .
Arbesbach emerged at the beginning of the 13th century below this castle as the economic and pastoral center of the rule. In 1246 the parish Arwaizpach is mentioned for the first time in a document. The market rights of the place have been attested since the end of the 14th century .
The parish church of St. Giles was built on the narrow side of the regular rectangular square. In its place, after a fire in 1756, today's baroque building was built (1761–1772).
On Galgenberg , southwest of the village, there is a gallows in a forest , which was last used for an execution in 1728. The gallows is built on a granite rock and consists of three stone pillars and a wall circle with a passage.
The incorporation of Purrath and Rammelhof took place on January 1st, 1967, that of Pretrobruck and Wiesensfeld on January 1st, 1970.
