The Wildensee is a mountain lake and lies at about 1535  m above sea level. A. at the foot of the Rinnerkogel in the northwest of the Dead Mountains in the Salzkammergut .

Location, hydrography and nature

It is located in the Austrian state of Styria , only a few meters from the border with Upper Austria . Although it is normally included in the Ausseer Lakes , hydrographically it does not belong to the Upper Traun , but to the Offensee , which drains over the Offenseebach near Ebensee above the Traunsee to the Traun. As a sinkhole lake, the Wildensee has no surface drainage; the water seeps underground through the karst of the Dead Mountains and reappears 500 meters north in the Jägerbründl . From there the lake drains over the Rinnerbach into the Offensee.

The name is derived from the fact that the inner Dead Mountains used to be free from hunting (ie "wild") and therefore not a sovereign hunting ground .

The Gründoline around the lake is a remarkable oasis of vegetation. During the times of Emperor Maximilian (15th / 16th century), char were used here .

Development

The easiest way to get to the lake is from Offensee via the Rinnerhütte . Another often used route leads via Altaussee and Loser over the Wildenseealm to Wildensee (E4, 201, 212). In winter the lake is occasionally used for ice skating.
