William H. Meyer (1959)

William Henry Meyer (born December 29, 1914 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania , † December 16, 1983 in Rupert , Vermont ) was an American politician . Between 1959 and 1961 he represented the state of Vermont in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Meyer attended the public schools in Philadelphia and then until 1936 the Pennsylvania State University . He then worked in the wood business, then between 1936 and 1940 he was employed as a forester for a civil environmental protection agency at times at the federal government and at times in various states. In 1945 he moved to a farm in Bennington County , Vermont. Between 1940 and 1950 he also worked for the Soil Conversation Service , an agency responsible for soil environmental protection in Vermont. In 1951 he started his own business as a consultant for forest issues. He also became director of the Vermont Forest and Farmland Foundation .

Meyer was a member of the Democratic Party . In 1958 he was elected as their candidate for the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Winston L. Prouty from the Republicans on January 3, 1959 . Meyer was one of only eight Democrats who have been elected to the US House of Representatives for this state to date. In the 1960 elections, Meyer was defeated by Republican Robert Stafford . So he could only complete one legislative period in Congress until January 3, 1961 .

Between 1961 and 1963, William Meyer was an advisor to the US Department of the Interior . In 1962, 1964 and 1970 he ran unsuccessfully for his party's nomination for the United States Senate election . In 1972 he failed with a renewed candidacy for the US House of Representatives. In 1956, 1960 and 1964 he was a delegate at the Democratic Party Congresses in Vermont. William Meyer lived in Rupert until his death in December 1983.
