Starting position
As leaders of the overall World Cup, Dorothea Wierer came to Austria for the women and Martin Fourcade for the men. The German team, which could not secure a podium place in Östersund, absolutely wanted to achieve this in Hochfilzen. Especially the men's relay, which finished the competitions in Sweden as a weak 8th, wanted to make up some placements. There was no change of athletes in the German team. Austrians, Swiss and Italians also went to the race weekend in Hochfilzen with the same athletes from Östersund.

While Dorothea Wierer won the second sprint of the season, the race for the German women was extremely disappointing. Denise Herrmann achieved the best result in 41st place, with which all women finished the sprint beyond the points. It represented the weakest competition of a German women's team. Herrmann criticized the result as "quite a catastrophe". Other managers and coaches also expressed criticism of the athletes' performance.
Lisa Hauser was the 11th best in her country among the Austrian hosts . For the Swiss, it was Lena Häcki , who crossed the finish line in 20th place, after three shooting errors, just over a minute behind.

After winning the sprint, Johannes Thingnes Bø was also able to win in the pursuit by a large margin. As in Östersund a week before, the French team presented itself as a strong team, with five athletes in the top 10. The German team crossed the finish line with Johannes Kühn , Arnd Peiffer and Benedikt Doll in 12th, 13th and 14th . In the Austrians, the 22-year-old Felix Leitner remained , as in the sprint, the best, but he lost 12 places and finished the race in 20th. In Switzerland, Serafin Wiestner improved from 36th place by six places and finished 30th.

Like her team-mate Bø in the men's race, Tiril Eckhoff also won the women's pursuit. After shooting without mistakes, she won ahead of Hanna Öberg and Ingrid Landmark Tandrevold. After the disappointing sprint race, the German women wanted to show a better result again. Vanessa Hinz managed to do this and made up 30 places with just one penalty loop (from 42 to 12), making her the best German.
Despite five mistakes in the last two shooting units, Katharina Innerhofer was the 34th best Austrian (10 places lost compared to the sprint). Lisa Hauser , still 11th in the sprint, had to be content with 39th place, also after five shooting errors. As 27th, Selina Gasparin was the best Swiss woman , more than two minutes behind.

As in the previous week in Hochfilzen, the Norwegian relay team won again. In the same line-up, she took first place again, despite a penalty loop from second runner Bjøntegaard. The German quartet was able to get into a good starting position mainly through precise shooting and only had to admit defeat to the Norwegians on the final lap. France, which without their two best Martin Fourcade and Simon Desthieux took was 3. For the first time since her bronze medal at the World Championships in 2016 made it again a Canadian men's relay into the top five. The Italians finished 8th, the Austrians 11th and Switzerland finished 14th.

In the renewed victory of the Norwegians, who competed in the same line-up as in Östersund, the Russian women finished second. Switzerland, in second place the previous week, ended up in third place. As with the men, Canada achieved an excellent result. The last time they were able to achieve a top five placement was in Annecy in 2013 . The German women disappointed once again and finished the race in 12th place. The result is the weakest result of a German women's relay. Only for the second time, after the 2014 Winter Olympics , did a team end up outside the top 10. It got worse the Austrians, who, like Germany, had to run three penalties, were 4:33 minutes behind Norway and finished 14th. The Italians who finished 11th did a little better.
Effects
To the overall World Cup
Dorothea Wierer was able to extend her lead in the overall World Cup. She was already 27 points ahead of Ingrid Landmark Tandrevold from Norway and 33 points ahead of Hanna Öberg from Sweden. The best German Franziska Preuss was 18. In the Nations Cup for women, Norway stayed ahead, as they were able to score numerous points, especially through their success in the relay, but also because Tiril Eckhoff won the pursuit.
In the overall men's World Cup, however, the lead changed. Last year's winner Johannes Thingnes Bø took over from Martin Fourcade, who was only fifth. With his two individual victories in Hochfilzen, Bø already has a lead of 34 points over Alexander Loginow .

In the German team
As a reaction to the poor performance of the German women, changes were made to the World Cup team for the upcoming World Cup in Annecy-Le Grand-Bornand. Marion Deigentesch , Maren Hammerschmidt and Janina Hettich were brought into the World Cup from the IBU Cup team and replaced Anna Weidel , Karolin Horchler (both initially in the IBU Cup ) and Franziska Hildebrand , who skipped the following World Cup due to a lack of running form.
Debutants
The following athletes took part in a biathlon world cup for the first time. This can be both individual races and relay races.
