The 5th Biathlon World Cup of the 2019/20 season took place in Germany in Ruhpolding , Bavaria . The competitions in Ruhpolding are traditionally the second competition station in the new calendar year and at the same time the second station of the World Cup in Germany, after Oberhof had hosted the competitions a week earlier. This means that Germany remains the only country this season to host two World Cup events. The competitions were held in the Chiemgau Arena , which was the last venue for the Biathlon World Championships in 2012 . This year the competitions took place between January 15th and 19th, 2020.

Starting position

After the previous week in Oberhof, due to the lack of snow, trucks were still driving snow from Gelsenkirchen to Oberhof, due to the colder temperatures in Ruhpolding, enough snow was produced overnight, which ensured that the competitions could be held.

There were also some personnel changes in the German team. Franziska Preuß , after having overcome sinusitis, and Karolin Horchler replaced Marion Deigentesch and Franziska Hildebrand . Both started at the same time as the World Cup in Ruhpolding at the IBU Cup races in Osrblie ( Slovakia ). In the men's event, 2017 mass start world champions Simon Schempp and Lucas Fratzscher were replaced by Philipp Nawrath and Roman Rees . Furthermore, Johannes Thingnes Bø, who was waiting for the birth of his first child and thus suspended the races in Oberhof and Ruhpolding, was also missing.

The strong French result was also supported by Quentin Fillon Maillet in second place, as well as shared fifth place by Simon Desthieux and Fabien Claude. With the Austrians Julian Eberhard could still be 18th despite three shooting errors in prone shooting. As the best Swiss, Benjamin Weger (one shooting error) crossed the finish line in 33, while Dominik Windisch was the best of the Italian team in 25th (two shooting errors).

With their victory, the French relay was able to break the Norwegian winning streak. The Scandinavians had all won the last six races and were therefore unbeaten since January 2019. Also after a year break, the Austrians landed on the podium again and finished third. The German team was not entirely satisfied due to too many spare rounds. In difficult conditions, the team of national coach Kirchner was 5th. After each penalty loop, the quartet from Italy was 12th, the team from Switzerland, almost six minutes behind, 16.

In the fourth relay race of the season, the Norwegian relay won for the fourth time. In the last relay race before the World Championships, the Norwegians were a minute behind in 16th place after the first runner, but were able to make up positions and time with each runner and were thus able to achieve first place. For the two French women, it was the second, and for the third Swiss women, the third podium of the season. The German team narrowly missed the podium again and finished fourth for the third time in the fourth race. The Italians, still leading after the starting runner Lisa Vittozzi , came in seventh in the end. The team from Austria crossed the finish line in eighth place.

By winning the pursuit, Martin Fourcade has won all races since Johannes Thingnes Bø's absence. His team-mate Fillon Maillet and Norwegian Christiansen were on the podium with him. This prevailed only in the finish sprint against the third Frenchman Simon Desthieux. Benedikt Doll, who ran the final lap together with Desthieux and Christiansen, had to admit defeat shortly before the finish and was 5th. The best Italian was again Dominik Windisch (33./4 shooting errors), who crossed the finish line three minutes after Fourcade. In the photo finish he prevailed against the best Swiss Benjamin Wegner (34th / 3 shooting errors). Around 20 seconds ahead of them, the first Austrian with Julian Eberhard had crossed the finish line in 25th place, despite five shooting errors.

Tiril Eckhoff was able to win again in the pursuit race in Ruhpolding. The Norwegian has won six of the last eight races and is still at the top of the overall World Cup. Paulína Fialková crossed the finish line in second place, leaving Hanna Öberg and the two other Swedes Skottheim and Persson behind on the final lap. Dorothea Wierer , who dominated the season ahead of Tiril Eckhoff, dropped from fifth to 20th place after a total of five shooting errors in heavy snowfall. With six shooting errors, Lena Häcki was the 25th best Swiss woman . Julia Schwaiger (31st) was the best in the team from Austria .

    Effects

    To the overall World Cup

Both Martin Fourcade for the men and Tiril Eckhoff for the women were able to expand their tours in the overall World Cup due to their double victories. Eckhoff is now 42 points ahead of Dorothea Wierer (Italy). Fourcade was able to extend his lead to 71 points over his team-mate Fillon Maillet and 72 points over Simon Desthieux, which means that the overall World Cup was led by three Frenchmen. Johannes Thingnes Bø , who was still wearing the yellow jersey before the turn of the year, fell back to seventh place, 133 points behind.

    In the German team

On the sidelines of the World Cup, it was also announced that Simon Schempp will not start at the 2020 World Championships in Antholz . The German national coach Mark Kirchner announced. Instead, Schempp should start at the European Championships in Otepää in Estonia at the end of February 2020. However, he offered Erik Lesser a start for the competitions on the Pokljuka in the following week, so that he can still qualify for world championships. The 31-year-old has not yet reached the German World Cup norm.
