The federal state of Aguascalientes [ a.ɣwas.kaˈljen.tes ], officially Free and Sovereign State of Aguascalientes ( Spanish Estado Libre y Soberano de Aguascalientes ), is located in the north-central part of Mexico between Jalisco and Zacatecas . With 5,471 km² (1.2 million inhabitants) it is the fourth smallest Mexican state. The capital is Aguascalientes .

The state of Aguascalientes is located in central Mexico, 480 km north of Mexico City between Zacatecas and Jalisco .
history
The area separated on May 23, 1835 from the state of Zacatecas , to which it had belonged since independence from Spain. As an independent state, it is set out in Article 43 of the 1857 Constitution.

Aguascalientes is divided into eleven administrative districts ( Municipios ) with 2932 localities ( localidades ) (including 29 urban ones), which include rural communities ( pueblos ) and farms ( ranchos , haciendas ).

The Municipios were named after their administrative seat (span. Cabecera municipal ). By far the most populous city in the state is the capital Aguascalientes. Other cities with at least ten thousand inhabitants are Calvillo , Jesús Gómez Portugal , Jesús María , Pabellón de Arteaga , Rincón de Romos and San Francisco de los Romo .
