The Ahrenshooper Holz nature reserve is a 55 hectare nature reserve in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, one kilometer northeast of Ahrenshoop . It was placed under protection on September 4, 1958 with the aim of protecting and developing an old beech forest with peat sites and dense stocks of holly.

The current state of the area is assessed as unsatisfactory, as the water balance of the areas was severely disturbed by drainage measures.

A hiking trail leads from Ahrenshoop through the protected area.

history

The Ahrenshooper wood was created on the formerly muddy sea sand plain between the two Pleistocene cores Altdarß and the Ahrenshooper Schifferberg. It was used as pasture forest until the beginning of the 19th century. The Ahrenshooper wood was placed under nature protection in 1958 and has not been used for forestry since a devastating windthrow in the winter of 1967/68. However, with the poldering of the surrounding grassland in 1970, drainage ditches were created in Ahrenshooper Holz. The resulting lowering of the water table resulted in the death of numerous old trees.

Flora and fauna

The reserve has an old population of red beech and English oak , which has remained unchanged for about 450 years, as well as a considerable population of the Atlantic holly tree ( Ilex aquifolium ). This is related to the high proportion of dead wood , which gives the forest a primeval forest-like character. Other tree species are sycamore maple , red alder , silver birch and mountain ash . The natural forest community corresponds to a woodruff beech forest ( Galio odorati-Fegetum ). Base pointers in the field layer such as forest flutter grass ( Milium effusum ), multi-flowered white root ( Polygonatum multiflorum ) and lily of the valley ( Convallaria majalis ) indicate the origin of the substrate: the younger sands contain lime from mussel shells, which was formerly part of the Baltic surf there were deposited. In the shrub layer, Purgier buckthorn ( Rhamnus cathartica ) also appears as a base pointer. However, clearings are mainly occupied by bracken ( Pteridium aquifolium ).

The Ahrenshooper wood is also a breeding area for the rare bird species stock dove , tawny owl , middle woodpecker and miniature flycatcher .
