The old castle in Tettnang was built as the residence of the Counts of Montfort and today serves as the town hall of the Baden-Württemberg city in the Lake Constance district .

history

After the destruction of the Thirty Years' War , which also destroyed the old castle, the Counts of Montfort used the gate lock as a residence from 1629 . Count Johann X. von Montfort (1627–1686) had a palace built on the site in front of the castle ruins from 1667. The builder was Michael Kuen from Vorarlberg . In its modest dimension it corresponded to the economic possibilities of the counts, but not to their dynastic demands, since they regarded themselves as descendants of the Count Palatine of Tübingen as representatives of one of the noblest families of Upper Swabia . Therefore, under Count Anton III. von Montfort built the New Castle between 1712 and 1728 .

The old castle then served as an apartment for court servants such as the head forester, as a tithe barn , drying hall for hops and storage building. In 1903 it was finally acquired by the city for 35,000 marks and converted into a representative town hall in 1904 by the architects Ludwig Eisenlohr and Carl Weigle for a price of 60,000 marks; the move took place on March 20, 1905.

Building description

The rectangular house is a Renaissance building with a high pitched roof. The facade is unadorned except for the striking stepped gable and an elaborately designed alliance coat of arms above the portal in the middle of the nine-axis, three-storey building. It shows the coats of arms of the builder and his two wives, Countess Maria Anna Eusebia von Königsegg-Aulendorf and Anna Katharina von Sulz. The center of the building is also emphasized by a gable on which the town hall clock and the year of construction are attached.

On the ground floor, the barrel vaulted rooms from the construction period with strong stucco work have been preserved. In the stairwell there is a picture from 1698 from the former Capuchin monastery in Langenargen , which depicts St. Anthony as intercessor for Count Anton III. shows with his wife Maria Anna von Thun . Lake Constance with Langenargen can be seen in the lower part of the picture . A view of Tettnang from 1818 hangs in the council chamber.

Surroundings

In front of the town hall is the St. Georg chapel, built in 1682 , which is probably on the site of the former castle chapel and belonged to the court of the old castle. The single-nave, narrow, unadorned room with a retracted choir was built by the Vorarlberg master builder Heinrich Bader. The baroque high altar from 1758 shows Maria Magdalena under the crucifix . It was erected here in 1828 and comes from the palace church of the New Palace.
