Artistic creation

Andreas Legath bases his painting on Mediterranean landscape structures. Over decades, he established the fund of his imagery in drawings and photographs: terracing, erosion furrows and grids result in the structures sought by the painter and, in large canvas paintings, are subjected to a haptic process of layering relational materials of original origin. Legath's color cosmos is fed by the earthy harmony of the south. Its surfaces are often close to excavations, the gleam of which can still be guessed through the surface. The differentiation and thus the subtle richness of the painter's palette lies in the limitation of colors.

The works made on thin hand-scooped paper also have a “crater-like” substructure, the colors of which appear weathered and broken. This creates structures in which the interplay of light and shadow of the south can be found. With the medium of printmaking , in particular with etching , the artist realizes his idea with deep etching or with the powerful grip of the drypoint , which does not regard abstraction and realistic depiction as opposites and in this polarity leads to a new view of landscape pictorial thinking.
