history

Asiana Boeing 737-400 in 2001

Asiana Airlines was founded in 1988 by the Kumho Asiana Group . Until 1989, overseas flights for Koreans were strictly regulated by the military government and could only be undertaken by the state monopoly Korean Air . The Olympic Games eased it in 1988 . Korean Air was unable to handle the onslaught that followed. The conglomerate Kumho Asiana Group was allowed to set up an airline called Asiana Airlines. Flight operations began on December 23, 1988 with six Boeing 737-400 leased .

The first international flight took place in 1990 from Seoul-Gimpo to Tokyo and also in 1990 Asiana Airlines was able to receive the first Boeing 767 from the manufacturer. Gradually, the fleet and the international route network were expanded. In 1994, the first hit 747 - cargo plane one. In addition to Boeing, Airbus has also been using aircraft for medium and long-haul routes since 1996 .

In March 2003, the country acceded to the airline alliance Star Alliance .

On July 16, 2008 Asiana Airlines ordered a total of 30 copies of the Airbus A350 including ten options. Of these, eight are A350-800, twelve A350-900 and ten A350-1000. Asiana is the only airline that has ordered all three versions of the A350. The first aircraft, an A350-900, was delivered on April 24, 2017.

In 2010, Asiana won Skytrax's Airline of the Year award .

In January 2011 Asiana ordered six A380-800s from Airbus (total list price would be 1.4 billion euros). It is to be used on long-haul routes to North America and Europe . The first machine was delivered in May 2014.

Asiana Airlines operates low-cost airlines with Air Busan and Air Seoul .

According to Skytrax , along with All Nippon Airways , Cathay Pacific , Etihad Airways , Eva Air , Garuda Indonesia , Hainan Airlines , Lufthansa , Qatar Airways and Singapore Airlines, it is one of the ten 5-star airlines in the world (as of January 2018).

In April 2019, Kumho Asiana decided to put the Asiana airline up for sale. The plan is for a consortium of Hyundai Development and Mirae Asset Daewoo to take over the 31 percent stake in Kumho Asiana for 2.5 trillion won in December 2019.

Incidents

  • On 11 November 1998, a rolled Boeing 747-400 with the air vehicle registration HL7414 on the flight from Seoul Gimpo to New York City for the purpose of refueling to the parking position in Anchorage . When trying to make a 180-degree turn, engine 1 hit the wing of a parked Ilyushin Il-62 of Aeroflot (aircraft registration number RA-86564 ). Immediately thereafter, the Boeing's left wing bored into the front of the Ilyushin's vertical stabilizer. The Asiana pilots stepped up the throttle so that their wing cut halfway through the Ilyushin's tail unit. Excessive rolling speed was found to be the main cause. There was no personal injury; the Il-62 had to be scrapped, however.
  • On July 28, 2011 at 4:12 a.m. local time, a Boeing 747-400F with the aircraft registration number HL7604 on a flight from Seoul-Incheon to Shanghai with a two-man crew crashed near Jeju-do Island , about 250 miles south of Seoul Sea. The crew had previously reported a fire alarm in the cargo hold and attempted a safety landing at Jeju Airport . According to the Ministry of Transport in Incheon, the cargo plane had loaded 58 tons of cargo, of which around 400 kg were classified as "highly flammable". Among other things, lithium batteries, semiconductors, paint and resin solution were charged (see also Asiana Airlines flight 991 ) .
The Asiana Airlines Boeing 777-200ER crashed on July 6, 2013 in San Francisco
  • On July 6, 2013, a Boeing 777-200ER with the aircraft registration number HL7742 from Seoul-Incheon crashed while approaching San Francisco International Airport . The machine touched down in front of runway 28L and came to a standstill on the tarmac, severely damaged. There were 291 passengers and 16 crew members on board, three people were killed and 181 people injured, 47 of them seriously (see also Asiana Airlines flight 214 ) .
  • On April 14, 2015, an Airbus A320-200 with the aircraft registration number HL7762 crashed on the flight from Seoul-Incheon while approaching Hiroshima Airport . The aircraft brushed against an antenna system and hit the ground 330 meters from the runway; the machine finally came to a stop 130 meters from the runway after turning 180 degrees. 27 of the occupants were injured and the aircraft suffered significant property damage.
