The outer areas of the United States (officially the outer areas under the sovereignty of the United States of America , English the Outlying Territories under the Jurisdiction of the United States of America ) are a designation for the following archipelagos and islands , broken down by location ( Caribbean and American Oceania in the Pacific ):

²The Palmyra Atoll is the only "incorporated territory" that is an integral part of the USA, but is not assigned to a state or the District of Columbia .

The former British -US American condominium Canton and Enderbury , which consisted of the atolls Canton and Enderbury in the northeast of the Phoenix Islands , became part of this new island state on July 12, 1979, the day of the independence of the state of Kiribati .

The US outlying areas also include smaller uninhabited islands and atolls, the United States Minor Outlying Islands . The Guantanamo Bay Naval Base , located in the southern part of Guantánamo Bay , is not a US external area, but a US military base on leased land on the island of Cuba .

Residents of the U.S. outer areas do not have the right to vote at the federal level, but some elect delegates in the presidential primaries .
