Baad is a place in the Kleinwalsertal in Vorarlberg and belongs to the municipality of Mittelberg in the Bregenz district .

geography

The place is located 35½ kilometers southeast of Bregenz , 28½ kilometers south of Immenstadt , in the western part of the Allgäu Alps , between the northwestern Walsertal mountains and the southeastern Walsertal mountains .

Baad lies at the end of the Kleinwalsertal, about 4 km behind Mittelberg , at about 1244  m above sea level. A. Height. The place is a village component of the village Mittelberg is, but local custom counted as a separate district. Together with the small village of Vorderboden , it includes around 35 buildings with around 150 residents.

At the end of the valley in Baad, the Kleinwalsertal divides into three small valleys:

In Baad, the Breitach from the streams of these three valleys (Bärguntbach, Derrenbach, Turabach) is brought together.

To the west of Baad, near the Hochstarzel, is the Starzeljoch  ( 1867  m above sea level ), via which you can get to the village of Schoppernau in the Bregenz Forest. South of Baad is the highest mountain in the Kleinwalsertal, the Große Widderstein  ( 2533  m above sea level ). It can be reached via the Bärgunttal.

history

Church of St. Martin in Baad

Baad takes its name from a healing spring that has long since dried up, and is derived from the term medicinal bath . The sulfur-containing spring was first mentioned in a document in 1434. The source was looked after in the former Gasthof zur Sonne , today's Haus Paul , which was the first house built here - previously there was only one alp here . In 1860 the spring dried up due to a landslide. Attempts to subsequently grasp the source again failed.

The Martinskapelle was built at its current location in 1851 and consecrated in 1855. A chapel already existed in 1636, which was consecrated in 1663 to save residents and bathers the long walk to the Mittelberg parish church. In 1711 the chapel was declared an expositur and the building was enlarged in 1738 and 1767.

In the vicinity of Baad, on the left bank of the Breitach, weak iron springs were also found, but they were of no importance in the spa industry.

The public road of the Kleinwalsertal ends in Baad. Baad is connected to public bus transport. During the season it has a 10-minute cycle. The bus connects Baad with the Oberstdorf train station on German territory , which is the closest railway connection in the entire Kleinwalsertal.

Hikers and inns in Baad

Baad is the starting point for many hiking trails, u. a. also for the ascent to the Widderstein. In almost every house you can find holiday apartments and restaurants. The Mittelberg campsite is located in front of the village entrance.

One of Outward Bound Germany's three training centers is located in Baad .

Winter sports:

  • Cross-country skiing: Part of the Steinbockloipe , a 16 km long circuit between Mittelberg and Baad, runs through Baad.
  • Alpine skiing: Since the last ski lift was dismantled in 2000, there are no more ski slopes in the district. There is also no direct lift connection to one of the ski areas in Kleinwalsertal. The valley station of the closest ski area ( Walmendingerhornbahn ) is located in Mittelberg and can be reached by car or bus.
