Group B qualifier: Austria versus Germany

The qualification for the 2017 European Basketball Championship for men took place one year before the actual finals in late summer 2016. Although all European national teams that took part in the 2016 Olympic Games and their pre-Olympic qualification in early summer 2016 had already qualified for the 2017 European Championship finals, qualification only began after the Olympic tournament on August 31, 2016 and lasted until August 17, 2016. September 2016.

In contrast to the qualification for the 2015 European Championship finals , where there were two-part qualifying rounds over two different summers, the 27 participating national teams played the qualification in just under this three-week period. The area of Kosovo , which is controversial under international law , took part for the first time with its own selection in an official competition of the continental association FIBA Europe , after it had previously only participated in competitions for youth teams.

Draw and mode

The 27 participating selection teams were divided into four different pots according to a seeding list, with the last pot with the least competitive teams only having six teams. During the draw, the teams were divided into seven groups, with exactly one selection from one of the different lottery pots being drawn into each group of four teams, with the exception of a group of three who, due to a lack of participants in the last lottery pot, had a bye to the fourth team. Of the German-speaking countries, was selection of the DBB in the first Lostopf, the Austrian and Swiss selection, however, included in the third Lostopf.

In the seven groups, the teams played a round-robin tournament with a round trip, so that each team except those in the group of three played six group games. The group winners qualified directly for the 2017 European Championship finals, while a separate ranking was carried out for the runners-up, in which any results against the fourth and last-placed team in a group were omitted. Of the seven runners-up in the group, the four best selection teams in this category were also able to qualify for the 2017 European Championship finals.
