history

After the Black Hawk War ended in 1832, the Batavia area was one of the first parts of the former Indian territories to be settled by whites. The first of these settlers in what is now Batavia was Christopher Payne, who built a log cabin here in the 1830s and named the place Head of the Big Woods . The place offered the settlers water power , fertile land, and limestone that could be broken in quarries on the surface. The first flour mill opened here in 1837 . In 1838, former Congressman Isaac Wilson acquired the land and named the place after his hometown Batavia , New York State.

Around 1850, the city was the center of a brisk limestone trade, so the nickname was Quarry City (quarry town). In the same year, the Chicago and Aurora Railroad (later Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad ) reached the city, so that Batavia was connected to Chicago by rail. In 1872 the city received city status .
