Belvedere (Montevideo)
Belvedere is a district ( barrio ) of the Uruguayan capital Montevideo .
location
According to Orestes Araújo , the Montevidean district, located in the central south of the Montevideo department on the highest point of the Cuchilla de Juan Fernández belonging to the Cuchilla Grande , borders on Nuevo París and Villa Victoria . It has an area of around four hectares. The Instituto Nacional de Estadística (INE) also mentions Nuevo París as adjacent barrios to the west. In addition, Tres Ombúes - Pueblo Victoria , La Teja and Prado - Nueva Savona connect from the southwest to the southeast . To the east are Paso de las Duranas and Sayago . Conciliación borders in the north . The area is Belvederes the Municipalities A and G assigned.
history
Belvedere was founded in 1892 by Francisco Piria . Piria had his summer residence here at the time. The name of the barrio comes from the view that one has there due to the described location. However, the area was basically part of the Nuevo París founded in 1869 and thus already existing at the time . Today, as in many other areas of Montevideo, this often leads to doubts about the exact allocation of an area to a neighborhood.
origin of the name
The name Belvederes is borrowed from the expressions "bella vista" or "bello ver" and therefore means "beautiful view".
Infrastructure
The most important street in this district is Avenida Carlos María Ramírez . In the district are the Parque Bellán and the Estadio Belvedere , which is the home ground of the Liverpool Montevideo football club . At least at the beginning of the 20th century, the Hermanas Capuchinas had their headquarters here.
