List of the Archbishops of Salzburg

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The following people held the office of Archbishop of Salzburg as head of the Archdiocese of Salzburg . (Only the first named, namely Rupert, Vitalis, Flobrigis, Johannes I. and Virgil were bishops in or from Salzburg ). From the early 14th century until the end of the Prince Archbishopric in 1803, the Archbishops of Salzburg were Imperial Princes of the Holy Roman Empire and called themselves Prince Archbishops .

Explanation of the list

The Archbishop of Salzburg heads the diocese , is Metropolitan of the eponymous ecclesiastical province , permanent legate of the Pope ( legatus natus ), and Primate Germaniae since the beginning of the Reformation in the Archdiocese of Magdeburg at the beginning of the 16th century, from the Peace of Westphalia in 1648 permanently and from Kaiser and Pope recognized.

The first bishops up to Friedrich I were also abbots of the St. Peter monastery (Abbot Bishops ) . Until the secularization of 1803 and the establishment of the Duchy of Salzburg , the archbishop was also the secular head ( prince-bishop ) of the prince-archbishopric of Salzburg. Andreas Rohracher first renounced this formal title in 1951, since then the heads of the diocese have also been officially called Archbishop of Salzburg .

The accumulation of members of small noble families in the office of archbishop is due to the fact that the Salzburg cathedral chapter decided after the reign of Ernst Duke of Bavaria that no member of the Bavarian or Austrian ruling family could take over this anymore.
