Mathilde of Tuscany
On the road from Reggiolo to Gonzaga , just before the border between the province of Reggio Emilia and the province of Mantua, lies the district of Bondanazzo di Reggiolo. Mathilde von Tuszien , mistress of Canossa, died here on July 24th, 1115 - at a time when the place was still called Bondeno di Roncore . Two kilometers further northeast is another place, "Bondeno", but which belongs to Gonzaga and the province of Mantua.
The building in which Mathilde died is now an old (privately used and therefore not publicly accessible) farmhouse, which shows that it used to be a stately home: an artistically designed ceiling in the area of the main entrance and frescoes with religious motifs, presumably from the 15th century, point to a more important past.
