Código Postal Colombia
The Código Postal Colombia ( postal code in Colombia ) consists of six digits.
The first group of two digits are used by DANE and are assigned to the administrative areas.
The second group of two digits in the range from 00 to 89 are assigned to regional districts, with 00 being reserved for the capital or provincial capital. The two digits in the range 90 to 99 are used for mailboxes.
The third group of two digits can map up to 100 postal districts / metropolitan areas in each district. In theory, 32 * 90 * 100 = 288,000 postal districts can be assigned.
status
The postcode system was officially introduced in Colombia in 2009, but was not made nationwide by decree until April 2013. However, it has not been implemented in practice so far (September 2014). Apparently FedEx Colombia wants to make a fresh attempt. A new website was launched on October 14, 2014, from which you can determine the postcodes.

Colombian addressing system
In Colombia there is an unusual addressing system, which has so far made it possible to dispense with postcodes. In every city except Cartagena de Indias the streets are numbered. The streets are designated as follows, depending on their course:
designation | Abbreviation | course | Sample address |
---|---|---|---|
Calle | Cl. | East-west | Calle 85 # 12-28, Bogotá |
Carrera | Cra. | North-south | Carrera 1A # 2 - 87, Cartagena |
Diagonal | Diag. | Northeast to southwest | Diagonal 54 # 23 - 45, Bogotá |
Transversal | Trv. | Northwest to Southeast | Transversal 21 # 101 - 10, Bogotá |
Circular | Cq. | Ring road | Circular 4 # 73 - 124, Medellín |
The address information now consists of the street identifier followed by the street number. The number sign (#) is not followed by a house number, but the number of the street that will cross next. Separated by a minus, there is a meter indicating how far the front door is from the so-called intersection.
Ideally, calle and carretera, as well as diagonal and transversal, are at right angles to each other. In practice, the course and right angles are only roughly maintained.
Address examples with explanation can be found on the right. Sometimes letters are also listed to make it clear that there are connecting routes, side streets or dead ends, for example.
