history
After Italy entered the war in June 1940, the fascist regime set up an internment camp ( campo di concentramento ) in Città Sant'Angelo . It was located in the center of the village, in a disused tobacco processing plant. The first 134 internees came to Città Sant'Angelo in the spring of 1941. Most of them were Yugoslavs from the territories annexed and occupied by Italy. In September 1942, the delegate of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) considered the internment conditions to be tolerable compared to other camps. In December, however, an internal canteen was introduced and outdoor access was restricted to two hours a day in order to prevent the internees from contacting the local population. Some inmates were transferred to prison sentences. In September 1943 the guards left the camp, followed by the internees.
