history

Origin of name

It is believed that the name comes from the village of Elliot (today: Abirlot; Gaelic : Obar Eilid ) in Angus , although the Old English form of Elwold also appears in Scotland. Little is known about the early history of Clan Elliot as few records have survived. This is likely due to the destruction of Castle Stobs in 1712, which was long owned by the Elliots.

According to legend, the extra “t” in Elliott comes from the conversion of the Elliotts to Christianity and is supposed to symbolize a cross. The different spelling is made clear in this rhyme:

The double L and single T Descent from Minto and Wolflee, The double T and single L Mark the old race in Stobs that dwell. The single L and single T The Eliots of St Germains be, But double T and double L, Who they are nobody can tell.

Robert Bell added in "The Book of Scots-Irish Family Names": "For double L and double T, the Scots should look across the sea!"

Coat of arms and motto

The coat of arms consists of a leather belt with a buckle on the outside, on which the motto "Fortiter Et Recte" ("With strength and justice") is written, and on the inside it consists of a fist that holds up a short sword ("Winger"). The old Elliots motto was: "Soyez Sage" ("Be wise")

Castles

The seat of the Earl of Minto is Minto House in Hawick . In 1992 a council meeting decided to demolish Minto House.

Chief

Margaret Frances Boswell Eliott of Redheugh, 29th Chief of the Name and Arms of Eliott.
