Anton Johannes Gerrit Corbijn van Willensward (born May 20, 1955 in Strijen , Netherlands ) is a Dutch photographer and film director .

Life

Corbijn was born on May 20, 1955, the son of the pastor of Strijen . In an interview he confessed that he was “deeply Protestant”. “I admire people like my father who orient themselves towards Christian moral teaching.” Corbijn describes his photography as “Protestant”. At the age of nineteen he became a freelance photographer. He became known for his photos of pop artists and other celebrities. The first photo that was printed of him in a music magazine comes from the appearance of the band Solution at the "Grote Markt" in Groningen in 1972. Hardly any of the greats from the rock and pop scene was not in front of his camera, from Tom Waits to the Rolling Stones to U2 , from Bon Jovi to Frank Sinatra , from Bryan Adams to Luciano Pavarotti and, last but not least, Joy Division .

In addition, many record covers are by Corbijn, for example from U2 (e.g. The Joshua Tree , Rattle and Hum , Achtung Baby ), Depeche Mode (e.g. Violator , Songs of Faith and Devotion , Ultra ), Nick Cave , Bee Gees , Metallica , Therapy? , Mansun , Travis , James Last and Herbert Grönemeyer . The collaboration with Grönemeyer came about because he and Corbijn were neighbors in London, their adopted home.

Corbijn has directed numerous music videos . He received an MTV Award in 1994 for the video for Heart Shaped Box by the US rock band Nirvana .

Corbijn is closely associated with the bands Depeche Mode and U2. He has accompanied both bands as art director for many years . His entire photographic work with U2 in the book Corbijn early 2005, U2 & I published. For Depeche Mode, in addition to the majority of the music videos since A Question of Time 1986, he shot the concert films Devotional (1993) (which was nominated for a Grammy ), One Night in Paris (2001) and Live in Berlin (2014), SPiRiTS IN THE FOREST (2019) and LiVE SPiRiTS (which was released in 2020 as a box set by Spirits in the Forest). The stage sets for the tours since 1993 are also by Corbijn.

Corbijn was also responsible for the election campaign of Dutch Prime Minister Wim Kok in 1998.

On January 10, 2008, Corbijn's first feature film Control , which tells the story of Ian Curtis , the singer of the band Joy Division , was shown in German cinemas, for which Corbijn won the TV Feature Film Prize on September 28, 2007 at the Cologne Conference received.

In 2012 he was appointed to the competition jury of the 62nd Berlin International Film Festival . From autumn 2012, Corbijn made another feature film with A Most Wanted Man , the film adaptation of the novel Marionettes by John le Carré . Parts of the recordings were made in Hamburg in November 2012 . Corbijn lives with his partner Nimi Ponnodurai in The Hague.
